Intruders is a drama television series based on Michael Marshall Smith's novel The Intruders (2007). Its 8-episode first season premiered in August 2014 on the American cable television network BBC America and is a joint production between BBC America and British channel BBC Two.[1][2] Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Stamm share directing duties.[3] On February 27, 2015, it was announced that Intruders was cancelled after only one season.[4]
Plot
Jack Whelan is a former Los Angeles Police Department detective who is asked to investigate strange occurrences related to a string of attempted suicides. Despite his efforts, he is stonewalled at every turn. Baffled, he concentrates his search on a secret society, Qui Reverti, whose members chase immortality by seeking refuge in the bodies of others after their own deaths. Agents of the society, called "Shepherds", find the hosts of the returning souls and show them "triggers" - items important to the returning Qui Reverti members in their past lives - that "awaken" the returning soul. Once awakened, they will commit suicide, forcing the host's soul to go to the afterlife if their will is not strong enough to force the "intruder" to go instead. In Jack Whealen's case, this destroys his marriage when his wife's body is taken by an intruder.
A serial killer named Marcus Fox comes back to life in the body of little girl. Both souls fight for control, causing their memories to become confused. The struggle is exacerbated when the little girl becomes aware of the Qui Reverti guidebook for returning souls, and begins using the information without truly understanding it.
Main cast
This article may contain an excessive amount of intricate detail that may interest only a particular audience.(April 2016) |
- John Simm as Jack Whelan, former L.A.P.D. detective. When he loses contact with his wife Amy, Jack becomes involved with the Qui Reverti conspiracy. He discovers that one of the members, Rose Gilcrest, has come back in his wife's body and has taken control. In his anger, he destroys many of the "triggers" that bring past lives to the surface. Despite his destructive actions to the organization, they decide to recruit him as one of the "Shepherds" in charge of bringing back the members and killing anyone who might reveal the organization's existence.
- Mira Sorvino as Amy Whelan, Jack's wife. She disappears at the start of the story, due to a Shepherd bringing the soul of Rose Gilcrest to the surface in her; it is unknown if Amy's soul was disposed of, given that Rose acted kindly and tried to give Jack a chance to live instead of killing him. Prior to the story, she and Jack lost an unborn child due to Rose's subtle intervention forcing a miscarriage. Her elderly neighbors had actually been Qui Reverti agents keeping an eye on her.
- Tory Kittles as Gary Fischer, Jack's high school friend. Gary worked as an accountant for one of the Qui Reverti members, who was getting rid of his wealth prior to ritualistic suicide. He was exposed to the effects of a "ghost machine", allowing him to see that there are two souls in each body; this caused him to see the soul of another old friend (who became a host to a Qui Reverti member) in his infant daughter, leading to his wife divorcing him as he became increasingly unstable. He commits suicide by jumping off the roof of Qui Reverti HQ, carrying information about their organization.
- James Frain as Richard Shepherd, an assassin who claims to be an FBI agent. He illegally shepherded Marcus Fox back to life, after being given a bribe, which he took to care for his badly injured brother. Guilt-ridden over his actions, he attempted to kill Madison to stop Marcus; however, he could not do it as Madison remained in control during their meeting. He covers his tracks throughout the season, and even offers Jack the chance to join the Shepherds.
- Millie Bobby Brown as Madison, a 9-year-old girl who serves as the vessel through which Marcus Fox comes back to life. However, unlike other "Shepherdings", Marcus has difficulty keeping control as Madison constantly fights back to regain her body. When she suffers a bullet wound, Marcus is ready to send her off to the next world, but by her willpower, she forces Marcus to go and regains control of her body. She suffers the consequences of some of Marcus' actions in her body, which included murders, swearing and drinking.
- Alex Diakun as Marcus Fox, a member of Qui Reverti who has committed murders across his past lives. Once in a new body, Marcus will freely talk about the lives he took; as his past lives ages vary and do not share the same DNA, he cannot be put on trial. By the 21st century, the rest of the group has gotten tired of him and decide to give him a final death. He bribed Richard prior, but did not know he secretly planned to bring him back in a child and kill him. In control of Madison, Marcus attempts to regain his former status; however, he was not able to get rid of her soul, leading to an internal struggle.
