Voice over IP (VoIP) software is used to conduct telephone-like voice conversations across the internet. This is cheap, and increasingly popular both in business and privately.

As a public medium, in theory calls made across the Internet can be listened into by users of the computers which relay them, without legal authority. So certain packages use encryption (either rigorously or to a less robust degree) to improve the privacy of the discussion.

Based on SRTP, which uses 256-bit AES together with a 3,000-bit key exchange system and voice based verification to prevent man in the middle attacks.
Protocol published as an IETF draft: "ZRTP: Extensions to RTP for Diffie-Hellman Key Agreement for SRTP" [1]
