Background and Production

Writing

The novel Aangan was originally written by late Khadija Mastoor in 1962, which won Adamji Literacy Award in the same year. It was also translated in 13 languages. But as the director, Ehteshamuddin was most obsessed with partition, so he scripted the novel along with Mustafa Afridi as screenplayer. "It was initially thought out as a film but now we're making a play out of it," he told The News International in a March 2017 interview, "We might turn it into a film later."[7] They worked on the script for more than one year before going on to filming.[8] He told DAWN Images that the original novel is set in the era of 1940s and 1950s, while the drama will also feature the story of 1980s and 2000s in a continuity.[2]

Casting

The director revealed the names of chosen lead cast on 17 October 2017. The cast included Ahsan Khan and Mawra Hocane,[9] Sajal Aly and Ahad Raza Mir in lead roles.[10] On 4 November, Sonya Hussain signed this project and she revealed to play the girl projecting traditions and garments of 1920s opposite Ahsan.[11] She has also acted previously with Ahsan and Mawra in Haasil. Abid Ali and Zaib Rehman will play the parents of Ahsan's character. Omair Rana and Uzma Hassan also signed in for supporting roles.[8]

Ahsan said in an interview with The Express Tribune, "I haven't done anything after Chupan Chupai, Rehbaraa and Ishq. MD productions and Ehtesham were my biggest attraction towards it and I loved Mustafa Afridi's Sang-e-Mar Mar, who is now doing the screenplay for Aangan. I found the combination great."[12] Sonya told, "I've wanted to do a period play for the longest of time […] I've never extensively worked with him before, but [Ehtesham is] truly one of our finest directors."[8] It was also revealed that Ahsan will be playing double role.[2]

Filming

The shooting for the drama began in November 2017,[13] and is going on.[14] Ahad said that the drama is expected to go on-air in March or April 2018.[3]
