Jasprit Jasbir Singh Bumrah (born 6 December 1993) is an Indian cricketer who plays as a right-arm fast bowler for the Indian national cricket team in three formats of the game. He holds the record for maximum wickets (28) in Twenty20 International in a calendar year.[2]

After a couple of moderately successful seasons with the Mumbai Indians at the Indian Premier League, and with his domestic team Gujarat, he was named in India's squad for its 2015–16 series against Australia, as a replacement to an injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar.[3] He consequently made his debut in One Day Internationals & Twenty20 Internationals in 2015–16 series against Australia.

Early and personal life

Bumrah was born in December 1993 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat in Sikh Ramgarhia Family. At the age of 7, he lost his father Jasbir Singh. It was Bumrah’s mother Daljit, a school principal, who single-handedly raised her children.[citation needed] Bumrah's father Jasbir Singh was an industrialist.

Domestic cricket

He started his bowling career by playing for the Gujarat under-19 team. He made his Indian Premier League debut with the Mumbai Indians in 2013. He showed some promise in his bowling with some pace and swing, he has impressed many in the IPL with his bowling figures, in his debut match of IPL 2013 he took 3 wickets for 32 runs against the Royal Challengers Banglore [citation needed].

He grabbed eyeballs with his slingy action that has troubled many batsmen[citation needed]. Because of his variety in delivering the ball, Bumrah was handed an IPL contract by Mumbai Indians in 2013 even before he made his first-class debut [citation needed].

Bumrah plays first-class cricket for Gujarat and he made his debut against Vidarbha cricket team during the 2013–14 season. He had a great game indeed, picking up 7 wickets in the match. Eventually, he ended the tournament as the side's leading wicket-taker.

Though he played just a couple of games in IPL-6, his impressive show in the domestic circuit convinced the Mumbai Indians management to buy him back for IPL-7 [citation needed].

A 19-year old, Bumrah grabbed instant limelight when on the Indian Premier League debut; he finished with figures of 3–32 against the Bangalore franchise [citation needed]. While doing so, he became only the second bowler in the side to pick three wickets on debut. The teenager was signed by the Mumbai for the sixth season of the Indian Premier League in 2013, with just 10 first-class matches in his bag[citation needed].

A right-arm medium pacer from Gujarat with an unusual bowling action, Bumrah made his T20 debut against Maharashtra in the 2012–13 Mohit Kumar Trophy, and also helped his side clinch the title with his Man of the Match performance. His figures of 3/14 were instrumental to Gujarat’s win over Punjab in the final.

The youngster was quickly offered a lucrative Indian Premier League contract, and Mumbai used him as a secret weapon in their very first game of the tournament[citation needed]. The subsequent year, he was again bought by Mumbai for a whopping 1.2 crores for the 2014 edition of the Indian T20 League[citation needed].

International career

Bumrah made his T20I debut on 27 January 2016 against Australia. He reached into the limelight due to his ability to bowl yorkers at the right time and perform well in the death. Bumrah has a slightly unorthodox action thus making it more difficult for batsmen to pick him up soon. Bumrah is a different bowler in pitches that assist fast bowling. The youngster bowls outside the off-stump or short quite consistently.

In The two matches T-20 series against West Indies in August 2016, He became the bowler to claim most wickets (28) in Twenty20 Internationals in one calendar year surpassing the record of Dirk Nannes.[4]

In January 2017, in the second match of T20I series of England's 2016–17 India tour, Bumrah played a crucial role in India's win. He picked up two wickets and gave away 20 runs in his quota of four overs. Bowling at the death, in the final over, he took 2 wickets giving away only two runs when England needed eight to win. He was awarded Player of the Match. He produced an excellent yorker in the final ball, with 6 runs required [5] During the 2017 Sri Lanka tour, Bumrah recorded the most wickets (15) taken by any fast bowler in a bilateral ODI series of five or fewer matches.[6]

In November 2017, he was named in India's Test squad for their series against South Africa.[7] He made his Test debut for India against South Africa at Newlands in Cape Town on 5 January 2018.[8] Jasprit Bumrah got his maiden Test wicket as he clean bowled AB de Villiers for 65 runs.[9] He is the 290th Test player for India.[10]
