DJ Fita rose to prominence in 2017 when he remixed gospel hit song Mungu Pekee[5] by Nyashinski. He founded the record label Sound Safari Records in August 2016.[6] Sound Safari had started two years earlier as a monthly podcast to promote House music made by Kenyan artists. The podcast lasted two years hosting various DJs including Jack Rooster,[7] Saint Evo,[8] and Jinku[9] among others.

Early life and education

DJ Fita was born in Makongeni Estate Thika and graduated with a diploma in IT from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology and a degree in Information Security & Forensics from KCA University.

Career

DJ Fita uploaded an unofficial remix for Kookoo by Elani on Soundcloud in 2014.[10] He subsequently joined EDM Kenya, a community-based blog that promotes EDM artists from Kenya.

In July 2016,DJ Fita released back to back remixes releasing an official remix for "Doing It Right" by DJ Nruff on 11th July 2016[11] and shortly after participating in the Chemistry remix Challenge by Tetu Shani which had 36 producers from around Kenya,[12] making it one of the defining tracks of the Nu-Nairobi Movement[13] and one of the biggest songs on Kenya's Soundcloud in 2016. [14][15][16] DJ Fita's remix would be among the only two tracks to feature two consecutive weekends on The Undercover segment on the Weekend Breakfast show on Homeboyz Radio, the other being the Chemistry Tropical House remix by frequent collaborator and friend, Hendrick.[17]

On 27th January 2017, DJ Fita released a remix for Mungu Pekee by Nyashinski which was made available for free download on his Soundcloud account. The remix quickly gained traction in the club scene and was soon picked up by radio leading to an on-air radio interview on Homeboyz Radio in February of the same year.[18] On September 11 2017, DJ Nruff released the second track from his upcoming album The Future is Back, Calling, which features vocals from Dan Aceda and production from Fitemba and Hendrick. DJ Fita would later hail DJ Nruff as "one of the first OG's to hold my hand in the music business.." through his Instagram account.,[19][20] [21][22][23]

DJ Fita joined Benga artist Makadem for the Africa Nouveau Festival 2018[24] and Ongea Summit 2018 to perform as the first DJ for Makadem & The Electric Bengalo band. Makadem & The Electric Bengaloo fuses traditional Benga sounds with the lead instrument being the Nyatiti and electronic music elements.[25] He made his debut on the annual global party, Earthdance, later that year performing in the Nairobi chapter of the celebrations.[26]

Fitemba

DJ Fita's first full-length project was with Mahemba under the guise of Fitemba. The duo released their first EP, Untitled EP on 19th August 2016[27], a few days before DJ Fita's birthday. The EP was made available on DJ Fita's record label Sound Safari Records and was distributed as a free download on Soundcloud and Youtube. The EP received support from already established Kenyan House DJs such as Jack Rooster,DJ UV, Basetown DJs and more.[28][29] While describing the Fitemba project, Sound Safari described it as "Fusing styles and mixing influences, Fitemba combine melodic elements of different music genres to create a unique sound. Infectious, rebellious, thought provoking and highly energetic."

Fitemba went on a year hiatus and appeared as producers for DJ Nruff's track Calling off the latter upcoming album "1-st Class".[30] The track also featured Hendrick as a producer and vocals were by the proclaimed Crown Prince of Benga, Dan 'chizi' Aceda. Fitemba were listed on the Kenyan EDM Artists of 2018 by LionAfriq, an Internet radio which has a listener minute surpassing 1 million minutes.[31]

Redux

During a interview with Rae Kiragu[32] and DJ Kafi[33], DJ Fita premiered a Dubstep remix for Hip Hop Ten Toes by Kenyan-Norwegian rapper STL.[34] The remix was a collaborative project with DJ/Producer Pinch 254[35] and has never been released to date despite premiering on 21st May 2018.[36]
