The final began with resemblances to same fixture earlier in the tournament – when England bowled out Pakistan for 74 – as Derek Pringle dismissed both Pakistani openers to leave the score at 24/2. However, Imran Khan and Javed Miandad settled down to see off the new ball. A crucial moment occurred when Imran Khan was dropped by Graham Gooch on 9 runs: he went on to score 72. At the 25-over mark, Pakistan had only scored 70. Javed Miandad, along with his skipper Imran started to accelerate the scoring rate. The partnership started off from blocking every ball to steadily lifting the run-rate. Javed was batting through pain, requiring a runner, and by the time he got out at 58, Pakistan was placed at 163 after 39.3 overs. Javed and Imran had scored 139 runs together with the final 87 runs of the partnership coming in just 75 balls. They both got out but were followed by Inzamam (42) and Wasim Akram (33), enabling Pakistan to set England a target of 250. The second-half recovery saw Pakistan score 179 off the last 25 overs.
England's start saw Ian Botham dismissed for a duck by Wasim Akram, soon followed by Stewart, Hick and Gooch, leaving England reeling at 69/4. With a partnership between Allan Lamb and Neil Fairbrother reaching 71, Imran turned to his main pacer Wasim Akram in the 35th over.[3] Two deliveries from the left-arm fast bowler resulted in Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis being bowled out. Not long after, Fairbrother was caught by Moin Khan off Aaqib Javed to start a regular flow of wickets. Last-man Richard Illingworth was caught by Ramiz Raja off Imran Khan's bowling to end the final, crowning Pakistan as the winner of the 1992 Cricket World Cup.
