Could we change the color of this background from deep dark blue? It pops right into my eye when I scroll the list and honestly this bit of information is not important enough compared to e.g. "not yet released" in light blue. STORY OF Floating Weeds

Just wanted to point out, despite what the article says, Story of Floating Weeds (Ozu's silent 1930s adaptation) has been released on DVD. It's included as disk 2 in the two-disk set along with "Floating Weeds" (Ozu's color remake) As a matter of fact, I have both disks literally inches away from my computer as I type this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.91.184.19 (talk) 06:32, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Laserdisc releases

So far the rule was that Films that have appeared on Criterion Collection DVD releases are omitted from the following list... I am fine with changing rules but this deserves a discussion. Hektor 03:11, 29 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry Hektor, I didn't spot that rule. You're welcome to remove the ones that I added if you want to keep to it. Although having the full list for both DVDs & laserdisks does let you include the laserdisk spine numbers SteveCrook 02:47, August 30, 2005 (UTC)
Sorry I wrote too fast, there is no rule here, but in this case I think we should put all the laserdisks. Maybe create another article maybe called List of Criterion Collection laserdiscs with a link in this one... Hektor 21:16, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rumors

Should rumors about future Criterion Collection issues be in here ?Hektor 14:15, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I would say no unless maybe Criterion themselves have somehow hinted at it. Thebogusman 19:35, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Future Releases

I removed the titles listed at the bottom as being released at sometime in the future because a) for the titles in question, they were all re-releases and wouldn't actually change anything on the list, and b) this isn't a rumors or speculation site. Even if it's been officially announced, is it so horrible to wait until they've at least formally placed it online in the Coming Soon section with a number and everything? Things get delayed all the time even after being "confirmed", and this collection always has so much speculation to begin with. I think the list here should be reliable first and foremost, not in such a rush as to be one of the first to "scoop" something, which certainly isn't a function of an encyclopedia. Just my two cents. Girolamo Savonarola 23:18, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Order?

These films should be listed either in order of their Criterion release (with included date) OR in order of their original theatrical release. Peyna 16:50, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They have a catalogue number order which is how they are identified both on the spine of the case and also on the website. This roughly corresponds to their DVD production order, although sometimes releases are delayed due to last minute corrections. Famously the #1 disc, Grand Illusion, was delayed well beyond the other initial releases because a better-quality source was found shortly before the release. That doesn't change the fact that the title was intended (and ready) to be released as the first release. I don't see the point in a theatrical release order, since we link to the dates, and the Criterion spine number tends to be the most popular way of "chronologically" listing them. Also, it allows the list number to match the spine number. Girolamo Savonarola 18:38, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's fine, it just wasn't clear from the article why they were in the order they were in; perhaps explaining this would be a good idea. Peyna 18:50, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hard to edit

The use of the # tag to effect the numbering makes this way-to-long page a cast-iron bitch to edit. It is imposible to find any film when your in the Edit This Page window because they are in no organized sequence and (Mozilla) "find" wont find a word or phrase that is in a Java edit window. I just updated "The Horses Mouth" and forgot to pipe it and now i can't find it again. Someone may want to fix that and come up with a new way to organize this stuff. 69.72.7.40 15:56, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dude, if it bothers you, change the # to real numbers and add section headers. It would take ten minutes max. Cop 633 16:02, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

K? I'll put it on my "to-do" list some day... or you can do it. Off to fix other links. 69.72.7.40 16:05, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OR, turn off Java. And use the regular edit window. Jobjörn (Talk ° contribs) 23:46, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not just is this page hard to edit but is also hard to read. With 380 names in the list and all the information getting crammed in just separated by commas and braces is illegible. Someone please take the pain to make a well formatted table. I will do it myself if I get sometime but if in the meanwhile someone can, please do. Vivek 21:22, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The list is now a table—with fixed numbers—solving most of the editing issues. —MJBurrageTALK18:15, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This list needs to be alphabetized

Putting this list in "catalogue number order" sort of defeats the purpose of having it on Wikipedia, i.e. it is not an encyclopedic reference. Going with a "catalogue number" order seems to be "jargon".. something to be avoided (WP:MOSDEF). "Think of the reader" (WP:BETTER) is one of the basic concepts for a Wikipedia page, re: "did Criterion release bla bla bla?" and or "Is some film I want to see available from Criterion?". If you know the spine number then that means you got the DVD in your hot little hand, no need to look it up. And with 380 entries on this page it is hard to find the film you are looking for or browse the list for other notable films (well there is FIND but that again defeats a purpose of Wikipedia, that is the ability to discover some new link or relationship). This whole list should probably rearranged in alphabetical order. Looks like a long job for someone’s rainy day. Fountains of Bryn Mawr 17:31, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that the new wiki engines features include an implementation for making tables user-sortable by different columns. Given that, it would probably just be best to arrange it in such a manner that virtually all of the provided information (title, spine number, year of release, director) can be used to order the list in any way one likes. Girolamo Savonarola 21:34, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In the mean time you can check information with sort features as you want from the Criterion Collection's official site. Vivek 21:24, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sortable list

Where's the code for the "user sortable table?" ... This seems to be a simple matter of text transcription, for which I have numerous tools. Maybe I can help ... leave me a msg on my talk page. Ta, David Spalding (  ) 17:04, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Information on the new sortable tables is here.Cop 633 22:23, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I recently did make the list sortable. The default order is still by Spine number which is the most common way of organizing Criterion releases as a group, but a simple click can change that to suit the readee. As a result, I have also added to the notes, trying to make them usefull even when the list is reorganized (I.E. one cannot count on the notes being in a particular order anymore.) —MJBurrageTALK18:15, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

More Information--Editions?

I don't know if anyone is enough of a Criterion buff to be able to do this, but wouldn't it be nice to list all the different editions Criterion has had for each title? (Or at least any that changed the content--remaster, new source, new extras...) I'd like to be able to find out when I see a bargain on ebay if it's not b/c it's a less valued edition (like the Third Man I just bought (maybe I just need to trust the market...)). I haven't found any source online, including Criterion itself, with this info. Of course, over crowding the table would be a problem--but maybe it could have expandable boxes?? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.14.111.82 (talk) 17:28, 30 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

DVD <-> Laserdisc

The lists should both be at equivalent article titles: List of Criterion Collection DVD releases and List of Criterion Collection Laserdisc releases. This current list, based on the title should include both. If no one disagrees here, I'll move it next time I happen to look in here. Jun-Dai 08:22, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's no point to having a combined list; feel free to move this article to a more precise title, however. Girolamo Savonarola 10:52, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Director sortability

With the lists being sortable, it would be good to have the directors here and on the laserdisc list listed last name first. I'd qualify this as another rainy day task. Doctor Sunshine talk 20:12, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Seven Samurai

I can only find two DVD releases of this film by the CC. The two disc one disc set and the glorious (POV I know) three disc set. I am wondering of the laserdisc got included in this by mistake. I am going to change this on the article page. If any of you have better sources for this then I do please change it back. You might post when the first and second releases were and if there were any differences in the extras here just so I can learn. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 06:28, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Funny you should ask, as I was just watching this last night. My Criterion edition is only one disc, so I would presume that this indicates that there are indeed at least three editions on DVD. I'm not aware of the two-disc version that you refer to, though - the three editions I am aware of are the three-disc reissue, and two one-disc editions. The only difference between them is that the original discs included a restoration demonstration that Toho apparently had issues with, so it was quietly dropped very early in the distribution. Girolamo Savonarola (talk) 06:51, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Many apologies for causing confusion. The first one that I have is indeed one disc. Usually when the CC comes out with a new DVD of a film I pass my old one along to another film lover but I had hung on to the older version of the SS because the translation on the new 3 disc set is remarkably more detailed in certain spots and I wanted to be able to show friends the difference should they ask. Your mention of the restoration demonstration that was removed jogged my memory and proved that there have been three DVD releases of this film. Many thanks for clearing this up. If you are in the mood I can recommend rewatching Ikiru as soon as you can. The reason that I suggest this is that I am in awe of Takeshi Shimura's acting in these films. They are strikingly different and extraordinarily bravura performances. To think that they came back-to-back fills me with admiration for this undervalued (in the west anyway) actor. Thanks again for answering my questions and I will change the main page back right now. MarnetteD | Talk 09:49, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

adding country listing

does anyone agree with me that we should add he film's county of origin should be added?--T1980 (talk) 21:54, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, I do not agree. This is simply a page for listing the films that CC is bringing out. Readers who are interested in the film can click on the link to finds out that kind of information. Here at Wikipedia I have seen too many of these kinds of tables become so bloated with items that they become very difficult to read. Even though I disagree with your suggestion T1980, I would like to say thank you for bringing it up here and I look forward to other editors reactions. MarnetteD | Talk 21:02, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Out of print heads up

Hello to those that have this page on their watchlist. I suspect that most of you are on the CC's email list but just in case I thought I would make everyone aware of this upcoming situation. According to this info [1] the CC and Studio Canal have not been able to agree on rights fees for several films (see list below.) At the end of March, this year, the list will be OOP. I am posting this in case I am unavailable to update this page at that time. I trust that one of you will be able to take care of this and my thanks ahead of time for doing so. I will tell you it is going to be weird not being able to buy Grand Illusion to give to a burgeoning film buff as a gift.

Here is the list:

Alphaville
Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy (Eclipse Series 6)
Le corbeau
Coup de torchon
Diary of a Country Priest
The Fallen Idol
Forbidden Games (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Gervaise (Essential Art House edition)
Grand Illusion (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Le jour se lève (Essential Art House edition)
Last Holiday (Essential Art House edition)
Mayerling (Essential Art House edition)
The Orphic Trilogy
Peeping Tom
Pierrot le fou (DVD and Blu-ray editions)
Port of Shadows
Quai des Orfèvres
The Small Back Room
The Tales of Hoffmann (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Trafic
Le trou
Variety Lights (Essential Art House edition)
The White Sheik

Again my thanks to anyone who can update the table on the article page on Mar 31st. MarnetteD | Talk 15:10, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I've seen this information on the site, but I feel like it would be jumping the gun to cite these as out of print until they are officially gone (which is in March) if I recall. Cheers though! It'll be a weird collection without Grand Illusion and Orpheus anymore. Andrzejbanas (talk) 16:18, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your note. Yes, I agree, as I stated, we need to wait until Mar 31st. Hopefully they will work out the dollars/euros situation one day. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 16:31, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, pretty lame news, huh? I think we should wait to update the page until they officially go out of print, though. So until March sometime, I think the page should stay as is. Get 'em while they're hot! Drewcifer (talk) 18:38, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Online Column-keep or remove?

I don't know who added "Online" to this list, it will take a long time to remove it. My reasons for removing it:

  • Does not have ANYTHING to do with the DVD/Blu-Ray list
  • Subject to change on the website

222.130.116.58 (talk) 13:08, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's another format Criterion is releasing their films in and they make them equally visable on the site as they do their DVDs and blu-rays. So I see no harm in keeping them. Andrzejbanas (talk) 16:00, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I dont subscribe to Hulu Plus but I have heard they have "every" Criterion release up for streaming.Tehw1k1 (talk) 11:29, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Seems the lists will be out of date daily judging from the activity, who is going to track what they don't show on Hulu? I also don't have an account but I think they pretty much put everything they have plus what isn't ready for retail distribution (if they even bother doing that for all their movies, maybe going digital is good enough for some stuff. Nevertheless, I would suggest the Online column has not much meaning on this page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.129.17.54 (talk) 11:59, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Posted 9/26/2012-

Looking at the Criterion website, it currently shows that 464 titles are on Hulu Plus and 106 titles are on iTunes. The article is woefully out of date and I agree that keeping up with the minute changes probably isn't worth the effort. I'm in favor of removing the column but would like to establish consensus on this. Can we please put it to a vote officially? Tehw1k1 (talk) 04:43, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Leaning towards remove, they don't really have much of a deal with the auteurs when that row was in place. So yeah, remove. Andrzejbanas (talk) 21:46, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I concur with the reasons to remove that you both have stated. MarnetteD | Talk 23:16, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Remove, but is there a mass-edit feature without removing a line from each movie? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 111.193.167.197 (talk) 06:27, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed - Per what looks like consensus here I first cleaned up the wikitext format so that it could be parsed and then deleted the online column plus one note. --Marc Kupper|talk 21:44, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More Out of Print items

As before I know that some of you will already have seen this, more titles are going OOP as of June 30. I suspect that the ever vigilant Andrzejbanas will take care of this but I am posting the list of films that we are going to be losing for all to be aware of.

Billy Liar
Bob le flambeur
Diary of A Chambermaid
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
Kind Hearts and Coronets
The Man Who Fell to Earth (DVD and Blu-ray editions)
The Milky Way
The Phantom of Liberty
That Obscure Object of Desire
Touchez pas au grisbi
A Woman Is a Woman

This situation is a drag but at least we get a chance to add them to our libraries if we want. Thanks ahead of time to any editor who takes care of this on July 1. MarnetteD | Talk 21:12, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ah! So many blu-rays gone to waste. Ah well. Of those I only have Kind Hearts, I'll have to get shopping. Cheers! Andrzejbanas (talk) 22:04, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Vigo boxset

Please don't add the individual Vigo films to the list. They don't have individual spine numbers and listing them all wouldn't be fair to other film box sets that don't have individual spines like the Brakage set. Andrzejbanas (talk) 18:27, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I second this. Without individual numbers on the spine the CC is, obviously, not considering releasing them individually. Thus, we should try to keep this list consistent. MarnetteD | Talk 18:37, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What about making the spine number link to the Criterion website for that release? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.2.171.45 (talk) 19:28, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your question. First, new entries at a talk page go at the bottom of the page not the top. Next, I would be against this. Aside for the immense about of work involved what happens when CC changes its website as it did several years ago and we have to go back through and relink everything. As it is now all one has to do is 1) click on the link to the CC's catalog 2) click on sort by spine 3) scroll (which you have to do here as well) and 4) click on the title (which you also have to do here.) Thus, getting to a specific films page requires minimal effort. Of course, this is just one editors opinion and other input is welcome. MarnetteD | Talk 20:46, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies for placing in the wrong spot... facepalm. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.2.171.45 (talk) 19:31, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A simply google query "Criterion <movie name>" will find it quickly, else go to the site's search. Not even the 4 steps as described earlier. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 111.193.167.197 (talk) 06:24, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Robeson

I just updated the Paul Robeson article. This article looks to have mistakes w respect to Robeson, see Paul Robeson [videorecording] : portraits of the artist. I can not update this page because there its a kind of complicated page, but I would think the publishing date of the DVDs should be 2007 and not 1925-1976. 66.234.33.8 (talk) 11:18, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Robeson: Tribute to an Artist is from 1979, thus the box set includes movies from 1925 (Body and Soul) all the way to the documentary as mentioned. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 111.193.167.197 (talk) 06:31, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Former Spines as Extras

I have a question. Spine #477 is Bergman Island, which (as it's own separate release)is only available on DVD. Bergman Island is however one of the supplemental features on Spine #11/The Seventh Seal on Blu-ray. Can someone add a footnote to the chart for Bergman island so people know it *is* available on Criterion Blu-ray, just not as it's own separate release? 76.180.212.199 (talk) 23:56, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done

Seems a common thing for Bluray releases. A Constant Forge is also just an extra now, and so is The Beales of Grey Gardens.

OOP titles need update

Criterion just announced the following titles to go OOP on 31 March 2013.

  • Army of Shadows
  • Le cercle rouge
  • Le doulos
  • Last Year at Marienbad
  • Léon Morin, Priest
  • Mafioso

Also, the AK100 set went OOP during their flash sale this month. This means that Madadayo is also OOP, as it never received a stand-alone release.

Anyone want to tackle this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seezee (talkcontribs) 20:40, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Given it's an encyclopedia article I don't see that we need to report that something is no longer available for sale by the publisher. For example, many books have articles which don't mention if that title is still available. --Marc Kupper|talk 22:02, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree, since it's a list about the publisher and besides it is being updated by someone as such anyway. I would just say that it's not necessary to make a talk post about OOP but instead just edit the article directly when the time has come. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.17.196.218 (talk) 14:44, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Art house column - keep or remove?

The Art house column does not seem to be useful from an encyclopedia viewpoint. We already note the "Essential Art House" titles in the "Box set availability" column. We also have the Essential Art House boxed sets section which lists the titles in these box sets.

There's also the issue in that 25 titles are marked "yes" in the Art house column, another 27 titles are noted as "Essential Art House" in the "Box set availability" column but are not marked "yes." It's not clear from the description of the "Art house" column why those 27 titles are not marked "yes." To add to the mess, of the 61 titles listed in the "Essential Art House" series there are eight titles that are not in the main table as they have never had a separate DVD release. Thus, even if we were to identify all of the "art house" titles in the main table it would be an incomplete list. I think there's one Art house title in the table that's not identified. I'd need to do some cross-checks to spot the title.

I'm of the feeling the "Art house" column should be removed unless there's some value to it that I'm missing. --Marc Kupper|talk 00:02, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I concur with your assessment. It provides no extra information and seems to be confusingly out of sync with availability column. Tassedethe (talk) 23:13, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not all films in the Art House box sets have an individual art house dvd release (Seven Samurai for example). Without the column I do not know how one would be able to determine which films have individual art house dvd releases. I think the column should stay. 205.143.205.142 (talk) 17:43, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Omissions from the "Additional Feature Films" section

Bucking Broadway - Spine 516 (Stagecoach) The Traveler - Spine 519 (Close-Up) Murder A La Mod - Spine 562 (Blow Out)

There may be more, those are just the ones i noticed were missing off the top of my head. 205.143.204.102 (talk) 18:05, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are quite a few others. The Lion Has Wings - Spine 431 (The Thief of Bagdad) The Volunteer - Spine 376 (49th Parallel) The Sorcerer's Apprentice - Spine 317 (The Tales of Hoffmann) But before I add the ones I know about, how does the ordering work in this section? Why are they numbered 1-9? -- SteveCrook (talk) 18:54, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Merchant Ivory Collection

I noted that these are all out of print. As some are probably aware, there is an ongoing lawsuit between Janus and Merchant Ivory. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.17.196.218 (talk) 14:37, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Release dates

One important aspect completely missing is a column for release dates for both the original DVDs and the Blu-rays. If no one goes ahead I may work on that, and I think it could be done at the expense of the boxed set column, since there's a separate section below for that. Jmj713 (talk) 15:43, 20 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That is a very complicated issue because most items have actually been released multiple times. Often with differences. Its possible to track the first time something was released, but I'm not sure how useful that is. 75.20.231.253 (talk) 03:21, 25 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be extremely useful, this is an encyclopedia, after all, and release date help put things into context. In my view there are really only three major release dates of note: original DVD release, original DVD upgrade release, and original Blu-ray release. Not many will have all three, but all these dates are important, I feel. Jmj713 (talk) 19:02, 25 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I say replace the "Yes" in the "blu-ray" column to the date of the blu release, and then add additional columns for original and re-release dates.

I think some have been re-reeased more than once (although possibly only in sets?), but for most titles those three dates will do. ntnon (talk) 01:22, 4 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Many titles have been re-released more than once and not only in sets. Its difficult to track because its necessary to track them by their internal criterion numbers and I'm aware of nobody who has done that over he years. 75.17.124.191 (talk) 01:56, 18 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
All the original and re-release dates are chronicled by Criterion Forum. It shouldn't be too hard to implement, just needs someone with lots of time to work on the huge table of 800+ titles. Jmj713 (talk) 14:18, 18 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ratings?

I've written a script that will populate the IMDB and Rotten Tomato scores for each film. I believe this matches nicely with each film's "Reception" section, but I will not update the list without consensus that adding these sortable ratings is appropriate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xportz (talkcontribs) 15:07, 4 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Region-free Criterion Blu-ray releases

Most Criterion titles are Region A, with the notable exception of UK releases. Those Region B Blu-ray titles are listed in the Table, with a 'Yes' on a light green background.
Now, the Ingmar Bergman's Cinema boxset is region-free.

In the last column (on the right) titled "UK release (Blu-ray)" one could have another background colour, or display some special character, to indicate Region-free discs.

What do you think? - 92.184.116.241 (talk) 13:17, 24 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Announced on Laserdisc but was not released, and was released on DVD or Blu-ray

Could we change the color of this background from deep dark blue? It pops right into my eye when I scroll the list and honestly this bit of information is not important enough compared to e.g. "not yet released" in light blue. I'm not saying it's not important but really just a trivial thing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.209.231.102 (talk) 07:15, 4 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
