Thappad (transl. Slap) is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed and co-produced (with Bhushan Kumar) by Anubhav Sinha. The film stars Taapsee Pannu as a woman who files for divorce after her husband slaps her. [4] It was theatrically released on 28 February 2020.[1]

Cast

Production

The film marks the second collaboration of Taapsee Pannu and director Anubhav Sinha after the 2018 film Mulk.[1]

Principal photography began on 6 September 2019 and ended on 16 October.[5] The film was shot in various places of Uttar Pradesh.

Promotion and release

The film was initially planned for release on 6 March 2020, but later it was preponed by a week to 28 February 2020.[6]

On 31 January, an official trailer of the film was released by T-Series.[7][8] On 11 February, a second trailer was released which shows Pannu breaking the fourth wall and asking viewers to report the video so that it gets blocked on YouTube.[9]

Reception

Critical response

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 86% based on 7 reviews.[10] Rajeev Masand rated the movie 4/5 and stated: "Sinha pulls off a complex story and extracts remarkable performance from his ensemble. The script gives us some great moments to shine and Taapsee seizes them. It is powerful and essential viewing" [11]. Taran Adarsh rated the movie 4/5 and stated: "Anubhav Sinha makes a strong statement yet again. Thappad asks uncomfortable questions, his best work so far... Taapsee spectacular, even her silence speaks volumes. PavailGulati terrific... Must watch!" [12]. Komal Nahta spoke highly of the film and mentioned "Thappad is a well-written and well-made film with some great performances. It will be loved by the womenfolk, the elite, the classes and the multiplex-frequenting audiences in the big cities mainly." [13]. Pallabi Dey speaking for The Times of India rated the movie 4.5/5 and mentioned "Thappad is not just a film aimlessly ranting about borderline domestic violence; it brings to light the years of conditioning that a woman is subjected to by her own family and society that she lives in." [14].

Box office

Thappad earned 3.07 crore net at the domestic box office on the first day. On the second day, the film collected ₹5.05 crore taking total collection to ₹8.12 crore.[3]
