Sengupta also known as Sensharma[1][2][3] is a surname found among Bengalis of West Bengal and Bangladesh. They belong to the Baidya caste.Baidyas are descendant of the Mohyal Saraswat Brahmin clan.[4]

Baidya is a Bengali Hindu caste community who have generally claimed Brahmin status,[5] but some have been associated with the Ambashtha caste or sub-caste.[6] In the pre-colonial era of Bengal, Baidyas were regarded as the highest Hindu castes along with Brahmins and Kayasthas.

Geographical distribution

As of 2014, 67.8% of all known bearers of the surname Sengupta were residents of India and 22.5% were residents of Bangladesh. In India, the frequency of the surname was higher than national average in the following states and union territories:[7]
