Afroz Shah is environmental activist and lawyer from Mumbai. He is best known for organizing the world's largest beach clean-up project, which has grown into a movement that has inspired people around the world to clean up their surrounding environment.[1]
In 2016, Shah was named by the United Nations as a Champion of the Earth for leading the clean-up of Mumbai's Versova Beach.[2]
Shah partnered with the Dawoodi Bohra's Turning the Tide campaign to remove plastic from the Mithi river and Dana Pani beach in Mumbai.[3][4][5]
Inspired by Afroz Shah's effort to clean beaches in Mumbai, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) launched the Clean Seas campaign globally.[6]
Afroz Shah has won the CNN Heroes of the Year Award−2019. [7]

WORK RESULTS
- United Nations has labelled his Clean-Up As BIGGEST BEACH CLEAN-UP IN WORLD HISTORY
- Hosted the World Environment Day , 5th June 2018 along with United Nations Environment Programme and Government of India on the theme of Beat Plastic Pollution at Versova beach .
- 40+ Million Kgs of plastic and filth removed from the ocean, beaches, creeks, rivers, forests.
- 1,20,000 citizens are actively participating in human ocean conflict zone to beat plastic pollution and to adopt a Circular economy.
- 2,00,000 citizens and 150000 (75 schools / colleges) students regularly working on roster system (Weekly basis) to clean beaches, mangroves, rivers.
- 1.5 million plastic pieces (Multi-layer Packaging) stopped from entering water bodies in last 2 year.
- One clean beach – Versova beach, second beach under-going transformation – Dana Paani Beach, Mumbai.
- River Mithi being rejuvenated.
- Ocean Cleanup in the Creeks and intertidal-zone.
- 43 Padas - villages in a protected forest- Sanjay Gandhi National Park – adopting circular economy – to reduce ‘human-animal conflict’.
- Inspired by Afroz Shah & community clean-up, UN launched Global Clean Seas campaign.
- In Afroz’s words “The cleaning will continue till the ocean is made plastic and filth free”.
