In February 2004 Edward Vick, a UK citizen, founder of EVS Translations (one of Europe’s largest translation companies) established the Vick Foundation, which awards the Vick Prize for best Bulgarian Novel.
The founder of the Vick Foundation defines its goal as follows: “To revive the interest of the Bulgarian reading public in Bulgarian literature, to encourage Bulgarian fiction-writers and unite literary circles”. His initiative was acclaimed by those who saw in the prize a new opportunity for the Bulgarian literature after almost 15 years of standstill.
Each year Vick Foundation awards the Vick prize for best bulgarian novel. The Vick Prize for novel represents the very best of Bulgarian contemporary works in the genre. A permanent comittee, in which takes part Stefan Danailov, Bulgarian actor and current Minister of Culture of Bulgaria elects а competent jury, which selects a short list of six Bulgarian novels from which the winner is chosen. The winning author receives a cash award of BGN 10,000, with the option of a free Translation of the novel into English. There is also a competition for the most popular short-listed book, based on votes cast by the general public. The book Amazonkata na Varoe (Varoe’s Amazon) by Prof. Boyan Biolchev,Sofia University Rector is the third Vick Prize Winner awarded by the Vick Foundation.
Vick prize purpose is to assist, develop and promote Bulgarian fiction inside and outside Bulgaria. The objective of its founder is to attract interest for works of contemporary Bulgarian writers.
Vick prize is now well-established in Bulgaria.
The selection procedure and the award ceremony, attracting artists and representatives from politics (just mentioning Bulgarian European Affairs Minister Meglena Kuneva), have added to the popularity of the country's burgeoning literature movement.
Now Edward Vick would like to draw the attention of the English-speaking world to the works of Bulgarian writers.
For this reason, the prize also includes a Translation of the novel into English.
