Socio-Economic Planning Sciences

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your messages. Please note that I was trying to update the wikipedia page for socio-economic planning sciences current in my role as it senior associate editor. I understand the copyright issues you point. Hopefully I can still include relevant links at the very least for the benefit of the user community.

Sincerely, Jomon A. Paul Jpaul17 (talk) 02:12, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jpaul17, it sounds like you have a conflict of interest (COI) with respect to this article. See the conflict of interest guideline for more information. Because of this, you are encouraged to:
Adding a dozen external links to the submission process, call for papers, etc. isn't really appropriate for a Wikipedia article — the link to the official website is sufficient. Wikipedia:External links is the full guideline on external links to Wikipedia articles. Thanks! DanCherek (talk) 02:19, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your message. I understand. The page with the current contents is fine in that case. I will appreciate if the inserts that mention copyvios report etc. be removed unless it has to go through a review process by another entity. I appreciate any inputs.

Sincerely, Jomon A. Paul

@Jpaul17: Thank you! I appreciate your understanding. @Jpaul17: Sorry, there's a bit of a backlog in terms of articles tagged for revision deletion, and only several administrators who patrol the category. It's a bit longer than I expected, but it'll be done soon — sorry I can't provide additional help in that regard. DanCherek (talk) 15:20, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Topic: Sayeed Abubakar (Poet)

Dear DanCherek, Thank you very much for your advice. Actually I am a very new editor in this line. I thought that the literary life of Sayeed Abubakar given in PoemHunter will help enrich my article. I am trying my best to improve this article everyday. If you have any suggestion for me so that this article may not be deleted, please tell me. Sincerely yours, Shish Mohammad Jakaria. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shish Mohammad Jakaria (talkcontribs) 07:41, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Shish Mohammad Jakaria — I'm not very familiar with the topic, but the article has been put up for deletion because the nominator wasn't able to identify significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. That is generally Wikipedia's standard by which topics are deemed to be notable, so you should see if there are any journals, news articles, etc. that discuss him in more detail. If not, the article may be deleted. Please note that whatever you do, you should summarize information in your own words, rather than copy directly from sources. Thanks! DanCherek (talk) 11:55, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Totally forgot to add the attribution, thanks for catching it! BubbaJoe123456 (talk) 15:17, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@BubbaJoe123456: No problem The original summary of "split out from main article" was pretty indicative but I linked it just to be safe. Thanks for your work on it! DanCherek (talk) 15:23, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding declined submission

Hello Dan,

This is regarding declined submission for: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Henry_Childs_II

The reason given is "This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article".

However, the following link about the subject is from the official website of the Government: https://www.mbda.gov/news/press-releases/2018/09/us-secretary-commerce-announces-henry-childs-ii-national-director

The subject is actually the national director of the Minority Business Development Agency, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce. This is reiterated on the following listed reference: https://middlemarketgrowth.org/a-qualified-opinion-henry-childs-ii/

As I am new to Wikipedia, please explain your reasons for not considering the above two links.

Thanks for your contributions!

Wickedwiki2 (talk) 15:17, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Wickedwiki2: Welcome to Wikipedia! I'm happy to explain. Notability on Wikipedia is generally assessed by the extent of significant coverage that a subject has received in reliable, independent secondary sources. Your first link is a press release and is clearly labeled as such, so it is not considered an independent source — it comes from the agency associated with Childs. The second link is an interview and essentially all of the text on that page originates from Childs himself, and so again it is not an independent source that would contribute to an argument for notability. You may wish to read Wikipedia:Reliable sources for more information on expectations for sourcing, particularly in a biography of a living person. Because the draft's references at the time did not demonstrate that the notability threshold was met, I declined the draft. Please note that a decline means that the subject may be notable, but additional work is needed to demonstrate that — I intentionally did not select the reject option which is designed for drafts that have essentially zero chances of ever being accepted. Hope that helps. DanCherek (talk) 15:28, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Makes sense, thanks for the clarifications. Wickedwiki2 (talk) 15:36, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Pipe Bands Australia

Hi Dan,

I've added content to Draft:Pipe Bands Australia. You previously erased nearly all of it. Please note I am the author of the content you noted as being copyright. It has been published with legal authority. Any assistance you can offer in publishing the article would be appreciated. Joel.ONeal (talk) 14:31, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Joel.ONeal: Welcome to Wikipedia! The material was preemptively removed due to the copyright notice on the website. Check out Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on how to release material under a compatible license, which allows anyone to share, distribute, transmit, and adapt your work, even commercially. Please note that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable, independent secondary sources have to say about a particular subject, not what it says about itself, and so basing most of an article on an organization's "About Us" page may not necessarily be appropriate. DanCherek (talk) 14:38, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Dan, its a volunteer organisation dedicated to assisting Bagpipe Bands... there's no other media out there on the subject...it's hardly a political movement. I'm just trying to accurately created a third party record of it's history... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joel.ONeal (talkcontribs) 14:43, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Joel.ONeal: Sure, I understand and appreciate your work on the subject. The primary issue here is copyright. The bottom of your website reads "© 1960–2021 Pipe Bands Australia" which protects your work from being copied elsewhere, and so that is an issue when the text is copied to Wikipedia. You will need to follow the instructions in the link I provided above or the text may be removed again. The second issue is notability, which is generally assessed by the extent of significant coverage that a subject has received in reliable, independent secondary sources. If the entire draft is based on a primary source (in this case Pipe Bands Australia's own website), it is exceedingly unlikely to be accepted. You should summarize information from any coverage that the group has received in reliable sources such as newspapers, magazines, etc. DanCherek (talk) 14:50, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dan, Apologies if I'm not replying correctly, getting my head around this format and platform. I take you're point and I'll work on the release of copyright. The website copyright is to protect against unsolicited copyright where as this is approved and realistically the same author. Citing it is proving difficult as its based on contributions from members of the wider community as not a lot of records exist from the time... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joel.ONeal (talkcontribs) 23:14, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I understand. Unfortunately, the threshold of notability has to be set somewhere, and significant coverage in independent sources is how that is determined on Wikipedia. Groups without that kind of coverage in reliable sources should first seek it out, and then a good article could be written based on those sources. DanCherek (talk) 23:20, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:Trobar de Morte

Hi DanCherek,

Thank you for your revision. The point is that I'm a member of the band, we have written all this information, the copyrigth doesn't belong to anybody but ourselves and there isn't an original source. So, could you tell me the correct way to express that information in order to achieve that the content and the draft be published? And sorry for our lack of experience, this is the first time we edit or create something in Wikipedia. Thank you!!

Penumbrator (talk) 10:49, 29 July 2021 (UTC)Carlos[reply]

@Penumbrator: Welcome to Wikipedia! The material has been redacted due to the copyright notice on the website — see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on how to release material under a compatible license, but note that it allows anyone to share, distribute, transmit, and adapt the text, even commercially. I will also add that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable, independent sources have to say about a particular subject, not what it says about itself, and so basing most of an article on your band's website rather than secondary sources would not be desirable either. Finally, since you have a conflict of interest (COI) with regards to the subject you are writing about, please read the conflict of interest guidelines for best practices, including how to disclose a COI. Thanks! DanCherek (talk) 11:13, 29 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Andrew Webster page

Hi There Dan,

I submitted a page for my father, who is a Professor of Sociology and has terminal cancer so was keen to create a wiki page.

We initially copied and pasted a section from the York university website (where he was Dean) which we intended to edit but I submitted the page. You understandably rejected the page due to copyright.

We have now changed the page and have written it ourselves and are trying to resubmit it but I cant work out how.

This is the updated page we are talking about-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Andrew_Webster

I look forward to hearing from you on how we can get this live on the amazing Wikipedia.

Many thanks

Matt — Preceding unsigned comment added by Qotchin (talkcontribs) 18:23, 29 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Qotchin: Hi Matt, thanks for the message and I'm very sorry to hear about your father's cancer. I took a look and he is certainly notable enough for an article. I will take some time to update the draft's formatting and references so that it is more consistent with other articles and then accept the draft. I'll ping you again when I'm done! DanCherek (talk) 19:32, 29 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks :) StjepanHR (talk) 12:37, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're placing a copyright violation on this article is a very heavy-handed move and frankly a waste of an admin's time to review. Why not re-write the text and delete/reference the offending link. It is not even clear here [unless I'm missing something] as to whether the web-page you've linked for CV took text from Wikipedia in the first place. I just don't understand your approach, you've left all the work to other editors to re-write his early life and redact a seemingly good reference rather than write it in in a way that doesn't violate CV. Mountaincirquetalk 15:09, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Mountaincirque: I strongly disagree — I don't think it's a waste of time for an administrator to redact a large amount of text copied verbatim from a copyrighted source, which is a violation of Wikipedia's policy. It was added only six minutes before I removed it so no, it's not reverse copying from Wikipedia. A very small group of editors deal with dozens of copyright violations that are introduced every day, and it is not and should not be incumbent upon them to spend hours rewriting every affected article. I've retained the URL in my edit summary so that anyone who is interested in the article is able to see it as a viable reference in the future. DanCherek (talk) 15:21, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Great work

Great work on the copyvios from here, many thanks! You may have already noticed that much of this may have similar or the same problems. Anyway, I'm considering what to do about it all (and particularly whether a CCI is needed); by convention we'd want to see five solid examples of unacceptable copying to make a request. Do we have those, do you think? Well, OK, I can see from your recent contribs that we do; which are the most egregious, in your opinion? By the way, if you come across a really bad page you're always free to just blank it and list it at WP:CP. That has several advantages: it saves time for you; it makes sure that the page will be thoroughly checked for any residual copyvio, or deleted if the copyvio is too pervasive; and it allows you to alert other editors who work in this area that there may be a long-term problem. I'm going to get some sleep now, will check here in the a.m. Thanks again, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:59, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Justlettersandnumbers, thanks for the message! I was initially hoping to go through their ~1000 contributions and remove the copyvios that I could find, but it was getting trickier the further back I went. There definitely are issues dating back to 2010 and possibly earlier based on their talk page so I'd definitely appreciate your thoughts on whether a CCI is warranted. From what I could tell, just about every significant addition of text from them has included copyright violations, specifically copying sentences from the sources that they cite (this helps with detection, but the inline citation doesn't always correspond to the one being copied from). This 21kB addition to Chris Martin (artist) was particularly bad, and Lever (1966) and Jason Stopa needed to be reduced to stubs to get it all. I think the fact that basically every diff that I checked was a hit for copyvio indicates that there is much more to be cleaned up. Thanks for the WP:CP tip — I'll definitely look towards using it in the future. DanCherek (talk) 02:58, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Barbad

Hey DanCherek, many thanks for assisting with the book requests I had the other day. I'm afraid I gave you the wrong page numbers for the citation below:

  • Kia, Mehrdad (2016). The Persian Empire: A Historical Encyclopedia. Empires of the World. Vol. 1. Santa Barbara: ABC-CLIO. ISBN 978-1-61069-391-2.

I'm not sure what the correct ones are, but its the three pages that contain the entry on the Barbad (entries are in alphabetical order). Would it be possible for you to send these pages instead? No worries if not, best - Aza24 (talk) 23:54, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging pages for speedy deletion

Hello, Dan,

Please do not tag pages for speedy deletion for being the creations of a blocked sockpuppet unless the editor is a confirmed sockpuppet and is blocked for that reason. Il Piccolo Marat Edit

Hey Dan - sorry about the Il Piccolo Marat edits. I was surprised that there was no synopsis for the opera and the NYTimes review appears to be the lone online source for one (even in Italian, which is very surprising). As it's highly unlikely NYTImes will permit the kind of licensing iikiPedia requires, I may draft my own synopsis from the score itself which will take a bit of time. There is likely no English libretto (the only vocal score I have is Italian only). But I'll make that a project. The work deserves more than the currently sparse entry. Thanks for your summary of Copyright requirements - I was just not thinking about it. Will do better in the future.

I see now this big box with "It has been requested that certain historical revisions of this page ..." Do you want me to restore the previous version fo the page? Or, because of my goof, is there some more complicated effort that must be made (the reference to "redact" perhaps)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gstalnaker (talkcontribs) 21:22, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gstalnaker! Thanks for your work on this article, your efforts to expand it are much appreciated. Yes, you can either write your own synopsis from scratch or summarize the NYTimes one in your own words — the latter might be an easier task in the short term. The big box was just to indicate that a particular revision (with the copyright violation) had to be hidden from the page history, since this is something only a Wikipedia administrator can do. The revision deletion is complete and the box is now gone, so everything is good to go. Let me know if you have any other questions! DanCherek (talk) 22:53, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Chetansing rajput moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Chetansing rajput, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Question from Awesome Peacock (16:58, 19 August 2021)

How do you create a article --Awesome Peacock (talk) 16:59, 19 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Awesome Peacock! Please see Help:Your first article for a detailed guide on creating your first article. The first thing I do when I want to create a new article is to determine whether the article topic is notable. Important things to keep in mind are that the article's topic should be notable. This generally means that it has already been covered in detail in good references from independent sources. Make sure to summarize information in your own words, rather than copying content from other websites. Writing an article from scratch can be tough for new editors, so if you are finding it challenging, I would encourage you to edit existing articles for a while to get the hang of things. Let me know if you have additional questions or need more detailed guidance DanCherek (talk) 21:45, 19 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
