Shamsunnahar Smrity, known by her stage name Porimoni, is a Bangladeshi actress and model. Her notable films include Aro Bhalobashbo Tomay, Rokto, Pure Jay Mon and Swapnajaal.

She was featured on Asia's 100 Digital Stars, released by Forbes magazine on 7 December 2020.[2]

Early life

Pori Moni was born on 24 October 1992 as Smriti Shamsunnahar,[3][4] in Satkhira District. After losing her parents in childhood, she grew up in her grandparents' house in Pirojpur where she completed her Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools Certificates (diplomas).[5]

Career

Pori Moni started her career with modeling after passing her Higher Secondary School in 2012. Her popular TV commercials are Pran Up with Arifin Shuvoo, Sandalina Soap, Pran Chutney, Topper Gas Stove, Jamuna Refrigerator, etc. She acted in quite a few TV dramas as well. Her first Bengali movie, Rana Plaza, based on Rana Plaza disaster,[6] was denied certification by the Bangladesh Film Censor Board stating that this was a national disaster and people might get wrong notions about it.[7] Her second movie Bhalobasha Shimaheen was released on 13 February 2015. She stated, "I am putting my foot on the big screen by Bhalobasha Shimaheen and I hope everyone will like the film." She co-starred with Shakib Khan in Aro Bhalobashbo Tomay and Dhumketu.[citation needed]

Personal life

Pori Moni married her cousin Ismail Hossain in 2010. They were separated after 2 years as they could not pay dowry.[8] She got married on 28 April 2012 to footballer Ferdous Kabir Sourav.[9] In 2019, Pori was engaged to RJ Tamim Hasan, but later they broke up. On March 9, 2020, Pori married movie director Kamruzzaman Rony, but the marriage lasted only a few months.[10][11][12]

Controversies

On June 8, 2021, Pori Moni accused Nasir Uddin Mahmood, a businessman and politician, of sexual assault on her at the Boat Club [13][14] and asked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for justice on Facebook.[15][16] On June 14, the main accused Mahmood along with another businessman Tuhin Siddique Omi were arrested by Bangladesh Police.[17] A week later, Pori Moni was accused of vandalism at the Gulshan All Community Club. Club President, K.M. Alamgir Iqbal, accused Pori Moni of vandalizing the club on June 7 night at a press conference.[18][19] Later accused Nasir Uddin Mahmood got bailed[20][21][22]

Arrest

On 04 Aug 2021, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided Pori Moni's Banani home. She was arrested with drugs Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD),Crystal methamphetamin (Ice) and 30 bottles of foreign liquor from her house in Dhaka.[23][24][25][26][27][28] According to witnesses, Lt Col Khairul Islam, in-charge of RAB’s intelligence wing, was seen entering the premises of the residence along with several plain-clothed DB officials.[23][24] Pori Moni has been under the spotlight since she made allegations of attempted rape and murder against a Dhaka businessman.[29] On 05 Aug 2021, A Dhaka court's magistrate Mamunur Rashid has granted a four-day remand against Pori Moni, Film producer Nazrul Islam Raj who was her friend and two of their associates in connection with separate narcotics cases filed under the Narcotics Control Act.[30][31][32][33][34][35]
