Suryakumar Ashok Yadav (born 14 September 1990)[2] is an Indian International cricketer who plays for India in the ODI and T20I formats. He represents Mumbai in domestic cricket and plays for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. He is a right-handed versatile batsman and an occasional right-arm medium pace and spin bowler.[2] He previously played for Kolkata Knight Riders. He made his Twenty20 International debut for the India cricket team on 14 March 2021 against England.[3] He made his One Day International (ODI) debut for India on 18 July 2021 against Sri Lanka.[4]

Early life

Since his early childhood, Yadav developed an interest in cricket and badminton. His father Ashok Kumar Yadav moved from Varanasi to Mumbai for his job as electrical engineer for BARC.[5] Yadav learnt his skills while playing in the streets of Mumbai. At the age of 10, his father saw his inclination towards the game and enrolled him in a cricket camp in BARC colony in Anushakti Nagar. He then went to Elf Vengsarkar Academy and played the age group cricket in Mumbai.[6]

Career

Suryakumar Yadav made his first-class debut against Delhi during the 2010-11 Ranji Trophy. He had a great start to his career as he top-scored for Mumbai with a well compiled 73 and was the only player to score a fifty in Mumbai's first innings. Since then, he has been a regular member of the side.[7]

In October 2018, he was named in India C's squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy.[8] In October 2019, he was named in the India C squad for the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy.[9] He captained the Mumbai cricket team in the 2020-21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.[10]

Indian Premier League

He received an IPL contract from Mumbai Indians for the 2012 season. He played just one match in the season and was dismissed without scoring.[11]

He was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2014 IPL auctions. He made headlines in IPL 2015 when he hit a match-winning – 20-ball 46 with five sixes – against Mumbai at Eden Gardens. He became the team's vice-captain and played regularly. He was the most expensive uncapped player in 2018 IPL auctions, being bought at a price of 3.2 crore (US$380,000) by Mumbai Indians.[12]

International career

In February 2021, he was named in India's Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their series against England.[13] It was his maiden international call-up to the India cricket team.[14] He made his T20I debut for India on 14 March 2021, against England.[15] He then played the fourth game of the series on 18 March and got his first opportunity to bat, and hit the first ball he faced in international cricket for a six, becoming the first Indian to do so in T20 International, and went on to score a half century.[16][17] The next day, he was named in India's One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against England.[3] His game changing performances at No. 3 led him to being described as an "X Factor" player by his captain.[18]

In June 2021, he was named in India's One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) squads for their series against Sri Lanka.[19] He made his ODI debut on 18 July 2021, for India against Sri Lanka.[4] On 21 July 2021, Yadav scored his maiden ODI fifty against Sri Lanka.[20]

In July 2021, Yadav was called up as a replacement to India's Test squad for their series against England.[21] In September 2021, Yadav was named in India's squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.[22]
