Paulo Centurion (born 8 December 1982) is an Argentine professional footballer who most recently played as a defender for Comunicaciones F.C. of Guatemala.

Centurión, son of the ex-international soccer player Cristino Centurión,[1] has played in four different countries: Argentina, Paraguay, Guatemala and Puerto Rico. He is a defender.[2]

Career

He made his debut in his native province (Formosa) in 2002 at Club Sol de América in the first division of the Liga Formoseña de Fútbol, where he was the best defender of that season. Later in 2003, he moved to Club Defensa y Justicia, also of Formosa.

He played as the defender for only two years in his province, and then joined Club Guaraní of Paraguay.

In Club Guaraní he debuted as a professional player on 29 August 2004, against Club Nacional,[3] and scored his first goal on 16 April 2006 against Club Fernando de la Mora on the 13th matchday of the 2006 Apertura.[4]

Comunicaciones FC (Guatemala)

In June 2006, Comunicaciones FC of Liga Nacional de Guatemala reached an agreement with Club Guarani as an 'owner pass player' for a one-year loan with option to purchase. Paulo made his official debut on 30 July, where the team faced Deportivo Suchitepequez in a 2-1 home loss.

The club finished first in the Apertura 2006 league tournament and clinched automatic qualification to the semi-finals, where they faced Deportivo Jalapa over two legs. In the first leg away on 7 December they won 2–1 and in the second leg at home on 10 December they won 3–1 (5–2 aggregate), so Comunicaciones reached the final where they faced their archrival; C.S.D. Municipal. The team came with all the enthusiasm to get the title that until then. On 14 July, the first final was played away and the score remained at 0 for both teams; everything would be defined in the finals back on the 17th of the same month, where the match finished 1-1, with Municipal winning on away goals rule, and as a result, losing that long-awaited Final which left Centurion and the team empty-handed. Despite this, Centurion won the award for best Central defender of the Apertura.

In the 2007 Clausura on 7 March 2007, Centurion scored a goal against Deportivo Suchitepequez.[5] Centurion played his last official match against Xelaju MC in a 2–1 win.

After a failure to reach an agreement between the respective clubs, Centurion left the club with a good image for having done a good job in the Torneo Apertura 2006 and Clausura 2007.

Club Guaraní

After his time in Guatemalan soccer, Paulo returned to Paraguay to join Club Guarani again in July 2007.

There he played the Torneo Clausura 2007 and Torneo Apertura 2008, and in the Apertura tournament on 13 April 2008, Centurión got his third goal as a professional and second with Club Guarani, in a 2-2 draw against Sportivo Luqueño.[6][7] Having secured his place in the starting 11, Centurion is followed by several interested clubs, and after the Torneo Apertura 2008 concluded the other "big club" of Guatemalan football convinced Club Guarani and the player to reach an agreement for his transfer; that club was CSD Municipal, and with the transfer, Centurion would become one of the few foreigners that would wear both shirts in that country. His last match with the Paraguayan club occurred against Club Nacional on 29 June 2008.[8]

C.S.D Municipal (Guatemala)

In July 2008, Centurion was contracted on loan for one year with option to purchase from Club Guarani to strengthen the squad at the international level and in the local tournament.[9]

2008 season

On 26 July 2008, Centurión made his official debut with the Red Shirt, where the team faced Deportivo Xinabajul away from home and lost 2-1.[10]

Thanks to the second place obtained in Torneo Apertura 2008, C.S.D. Municipal achieved direct qualification to represent the country in the 2008–09 CONCACAF Champions League. In this competition the Guatemalan team faced Santos Laguna, Puerto Rico Islanders and Tauro F.C.. On 17 September 2008 in Torreón, Mexico, the club made its debut in the contest facing the champion of Mexican soccer; Santos. The match was intense as both teams had world-class and notable players, and in the end Santos won the encounter 3-2.[11] This meeting was named as the best match in that edition.

They went on to lose 2-1 against Tauro in Panama, tie 2-2 against Puerto Rico Islanders at home, tie at home by the same score to Tauro, win by a single goal in Puerto Rico, and tie group winners Santos 4-4 after a dramatic last minute goal from Guillermo "El Pando" Ramírez.

The Reds finished last in the group stage, with one win, three draws, and two losses, and unfortunately could not qualify to the next phase. On the positive side, however, Municipal Was the only team that won on Puerto Rican soil the night of 23 October, with a score of 1-0.

Paulo Centurión with Carlos González

The team eventually achieved the 2nd place in the qualifying which qualified it to the semi-final, where they would have to face Deportivo Xinabajul again.

In the first leg on 10 December Municipal won 2-1 at Estadio Los Cuchumatanes. In the second leg on 14 December Municipal won again with the same score of 2–1 but this time at home. Municipal won 4-2 on aggregate and would face its classic rival Comunicaciones FC in the finals.

On 17 December, the Estadio Cementos Progreso, their home venue; was where the first leg was played, where Municipal fell by 2-1. The second leg was played at the Estadio Mateo Flores in 21 December. Both teams ended up tying 1-1, leaving Centurion and his team empty handed without a trophy.

2009 season

Centurión began the 2009 Torneo Clausura by scoring a goal on 19 April 2009 vs Heredia Jaguares, where the team won as local 2-1. [12] They ended up finishing second in the regular season which sent the club to the semi-finals, leaving Deportivo Suchitepequez in their path 3-2 on global (first leg on 4 June Municipal falls 2-0, Second leg on 8 July Municipal won 3-0 at home after extra time). The Final would be played against Deportivo Jalapa. The reds lost both games; the first game away from home ended in a 2-1 loss, and in the return leg, at home in the Estadio Mateo Flores, Jalapa won 1–0, therefore again leaving Municipal with empty hands.

After failing to reach an agreement with the owner of its sports rights (Club Guarani of Paraguay), Centurión leaves the institution in which he disputed the Torneo Apertura 2008, 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League, and Torneo Clausura 2009, with Centurión being an important player for the club.

Centurión is also one of the few foreign players who have played in the two top soccer teams of Guatemala and have played El Clásico with both teams.[13]

Return to Club Guaraní

Celebration in the locker room between Paulo Centurión, Joel Benítez and Eduardo Filippini after obtaining the Torneo Apertura 2010 championship

In July 2009 Paulo returned to Club Guarani, already with more experience acquired in foreign leagues. He disputed the Clausura 2009 Tournament, where the club qualified for the 2010 Copa Sudamericana.

In the 2010 Torneo Apertura, after several failures in the finals with previous teams he was in (3 finals lost), Club Guaraní won the league, which was the first title Centurión won. This title gave Guaraní direct qualification to the 2011 Copa Libertadores. Centurión scored one goal with the club, in a 5-2 victory against Tacuary on 17 February 2010.[14]

River Plate (Puerto Rico)

Centurión with the ball in the game against Guaynabo Fluminense FC at Estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel

In September 2010 Club Atlético River Plate Puerto Rico announced the incorporation of Centurión. [15] He played the 2010 PRSL Season, where he became one of the best players and obtained the captaincy of the team, as well as achieving the championship with the aforementioned club.

They finished first in their group (Group A), and as a result they faced the second-placed team of the other group (Group B); Sevilla FC Puerto Rico. The duel was played in round-robin matches.

The first match is played in Sevillas home field, where River Plate wins 1-0. The second leg is played in Estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel where CA River Plate is local, and it was a very intense match since Sevilla came with all the desire of reversing the score to dispute the final. Sevilla were winning 1–0 for most of the game, which tied the series, until River drew it at the 89th minute, leaving the overall score 2-1 in favor of the locals.[16]

The final would be played between Puerto Rico Islanders and River Plate Puerto Rico. The final would also be played over two legs with the difference that both games would take place at the Estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel, since both teams use it as their home stadium.

The first match is played on 8 December (Centurión’s birthday) and River wins 1–0.[17] The return match is played four days later, which was again won by River Plate 2-0, marking the trend that prevailed throughout the tournament (River were undefeated) which made them the deserving champion of the Puerto Rico Soccer League. [18]

In 2011, he disputed the CFU Club Championship, which is the previous group stage of the 2011–12 CONCACAF Champions League, in addition to disputing the Puerto Rico Soccer League and the USL Professional Division.

Club Atlético Sarmiento (Resistencia)

On 2 August 2011, Centurion was signed by Torneo Argentino B (fourth div.) club Sarmiento de Resistencia. [19][20] Paulo made his debut on 6 September 2011 through the Copa Argentina facing Club San Martin of Formosa.[21] Sarmiento won 4–3 by way of penalties (0-0 draw after 90 minutes). Centurion, along with his team, advanced to the round of 16 after beating teams of higher divisions like second division club Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy[22] and 2011–12 Primera División champion Arsenal de Sarandi. [23] The win against Arsenal put the club in the last 16, where they faced Racing de Avellaneda; Sarmiento lost the match 2–0 which left the team eliminated, although with a meritorious participation in one of the most important Argentine football tournaments.[24]

On 11 September 2011 Centurion officially debuted in the Torneo Argentino B facing Guaraní Antonio Franco with a 1-0 loss. The club finished 4th of 7 in the group standings and barely missed out on qualifying to the next phase based on head-to-head record with 3rd-placed team San Martin de Formosa.[25][26]

2012–13

Unlike the previous tournament, Sarmiento came first out of 14 teams in the Group 4 standings and qualified to the next stage. However, in the next stage Sarmiento finished last in a group made up of 4 teams and were eliminated.[27] The player's last match with Sarmiento was in a 0-1 loss against General San Martin.

In the 2012–13 Copa Argentina, he played his first game in against rivals Chaco For Ever where Sarmiento wins on penalties 4 - 3 (0-0 after 90 min.),[28] moving on to the next stage to face Jorge Gibson Brown. [29] The result was a loss by 2-0 L, which resulted in Sarmiento being eliminated.

After no agreement was made, Centurion decides to leave the club after the 2012-13 season in order to return to his hometown and keep playing the same category, giving priority to his family.

Paulo Centurión with Club Sol de América in a match against Atletico Laguna Blanca

Club Sol de América (Formosa)

After 11 years, Paulo returns to his native province, and rejoins the club that saw him make his debut, Sol de América, for the 2013-2014 Torneo Argentino B season.[30]

He made his second debut with Sol de América on 22 September 2013 in Posadas, Misiones, against Asociación Ex Alumnos – 185th school. Sol de América had a good performance in the aforementioned tournament, where they finished first in their zone that and ended second in their group in the second phase. They were eliminated in the third phase by Union Aconquija.

At the end of the season Centurion leaves the club to continue his career as a player in Guatemalan football. His last match with Sol de América was against Club Fontana de Resistencia on 10 November 2013; Centurion's team won 3-0.[31]

Antigua GFC (Guatemala)

Centurion again returns to Guatemalan football after 4 ½ years, to the club Antigua GFC.[32] He makes his debut on 26 January 2014 in a 0-0 draw against Coban Imperial.

On 23 February Centurion scored his first goal with the shirt of Antigua GFC facing Deportivo Sacachispas; the match finished in a bulky 6-1 victory in favor of Antigua, and Centurión had scored the second goal in the 2-0 halftime result until then.[33] His last official game was on 4 May against Deportivo Carchá. After 6 months Centurión leaves the Antigueñan club.

Deportivo Coatepeque (Guatemala)

Paulo Centurion of Club Social y Deportivo Coatepeque the ball in the party faced the Club Social y Deportivo Suchitepéquez

Paulo Centurion after having had a good participation in his previous club, several options arise; Until it receives the option in particular of the Deportivo Coatepeque where they sit to negotiate (the first condition is that it reaches the club but at the end of the Apertura Tournament is re-negotiated for the Clausura Tournament, with Deportivo Coatepeque the priority); The negotiation closes managing to return to the Major League of Guatemalan soccer after 5 years.[34]

It is worth mentioning that the team was very committed to the topic of the average where the decline was taking shape that in those instances the team remained in the last position in the standings. Beyond that Centurion always liked the challenges and agreed to join with his other colleagues to try to reverse the situation.

He debuted against the club that made him known in the ball pie chapín (in Guatemalan football); Nothing more and nothing less than against Football Club Communications on 18 May 2014 with an adverse marker by the minimum of 1 to 0, but with a good work in terms of personal performance.

Centurion of apoco seized the level to which it was always known to him (it was inactive by familiar questions from June to the date of the debut) in which he was considered a key player on and off the court; Therefore, on several occasions wearing the captain's badge despite being incorporated in the middle of the Apertura Tournament. At the end of that tournament; Paulo received several offers in the Guatemalan milieu; But he gave priority to Coatepeque since he was committed to the situation and did not feel the abandonment of the ship half way reaching agreement to continue in the team. It was getting more and more difficult because the results were not given because no matter how much the others won, they gave no advantages; Until you can not keep the category down with the team (one of the ugliest things obtained in football).

The last game of Centurión in the Deportivo Coatepeque was against Communications FC in condition of visitor with a marker against of 4 to 0. (already it was inevitable that added to the results that did not give; Were given, the institutional problem that affected a large percentage)

Universidad SC (Guatemala)

Paulo Centurión close up with the stare before the movement of Rolando Blackburn.

After a semester for oblivion speaking in terms of football, and also let him pass concrete offers of major league teams for personal decisions, and already started the 2015/2016 tournament of Guatemalan football,[35] Paulo receives the proposal of a prestigious team where after several conversations arrive at the agreement where they sign the contract on 6 October (with a clause in which at the end of the Opening they would meet to renegotiate the continuity for the Closing); Linking to University SC arriving at its fifth club in the soccer Chapín.[36][37] 4 days later it makes its debut officially in the game in which the [SC University] faced in condition of visitor to Cobán Imperial; Putting in the start of the second half leaving the final score of 2 to 2. Paulo had a good performance in those 45 minutes of play. Week later the University moves to the department of the Quetzaltenango where it faces of visitor to Xelajú Mario Camposeco, Paulo this time is of the game in his equipment (debut like holder on 17 October) where they lose The match with a score of 1 to 0.

The tournament was still in progress and Centurión already gained an important place in the squad like titular in main squad; Until the end of the qualifying tournament, the team did not award that position that would besiege him in the title fight. It is to mention that the equipment was in the last position, the positive thing that the University SC was no longer in that uncomfortable position.

The last official match of Centurión was against his former team Antigua GFC in the last date with a marker against 1 to 0.

Deportivo Escuintla Heredia (Guatemala)

Paulo Centurión celebrating the winning goal against Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa FC, second in his personal account wearing the colors of Escuintla Heredia

Already with the tournament in development, Centurión received a call and offer from the Sports Escuintla Heredia; This time in the second category of soccer Chapín First Division of Guatemala; Centurion would play in that category, before Antigua GFC. What most seduced Centurion apart from the team that is serious (as clear objectives have the promotion), as DT. Is the same that brought him to Guatemalan football exactly 10 years ago to the Social Club and Sports Communications and more than a relation of Technical to Player there is a friendship of means that made him give the yes without thinking about it Economic coming to agree without hesitation.

Closing Tournament 2016

Paulo Centurión in the game of the Final against Deportivo Carchá

He debuted before the Social Club and Deportivo Nueva Concepción with the score in favor of 1 to 0. and in his second game facing Deportivo Chiantla with a score of 3 to 0, Centurión turned in the 2nd goal that gave the advantage until that, then the party. In the penultimate date of the classification phase; Face the Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa FC where they win by the score of 1 to 0 with goal of Centurión in the minute 58, second both from its arrival to the equipment.

The championship was still under way; And the team escuintleto tried to obtain the classification in the fight of the title (already had been adjudged champion of the opening match) of not to obtain it would have 2 opportunities of ascent: the first one is playing a finalisima between champions of the opening and closing; And the second in a duel of repechaje with the last one placed in the table of accumulated of the Greater League.[38][39][40] Unfortunately he can not classify; What remains is to wait for the new champion (tournament closure) to dispute the finalisima for the promotion; The rival Social Club and Deportivo Carchá (Champion of the match Clausura). The game is played in neutral field; The Pensational Stadium headquarters where former GFC does of local serious redoubt of game,[41][42] On 22 May at 11 a. M. Is disputed the encounter where the escuintleco set ties 2 to 2 in the 90 minutes plus 30 of lengthening so the final is defined as a penalty shootout; Luck does not accompany the green set so they lose by 5 to 4.[43][44] So he would fight the second chance to ascend facing the Deportivo Malacateco;[45][46] Set that came out last in the accumulated Major League. The repechaje would be given in 2 games (round and round),[47] Saturday 28 May in the night of the city of Escuintla is the first game where the local team falls by 2 to 1, leaving open the series to undefined by the time; Since the green set can reverse the marker but this time in visitor condition.[48][49] The second match (second leg) takes place at the Santa Lucia Stadium; the venue where the Deportivo Malacateco plays host, on Sunday, 5 June at 12:00 noon, the schedule of the match is agreed where the locals win the match by 4 to 2; staying in Liga Mayor Malacateco, and where the Escuintlecos fail to realize the longed for promotion to the highest category of Guatemalan football.[50]

Opening Tournament - Closing 2016/2017

Paulo Centurión hits the ball on the opponent's area

After the conclusion of the Opening and Closing of the 2015/2016 Season. Paulo Centurion reached the agreement with the club board to play 1 year more the 2016/2017 Season. Start the Apertura with a victory of 1 to 0 as a visitor to Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa FC, good start for the pretensions of qualifying to enter the dispute of the phase for the title fight and thus have a key to the ascent to which they had escaped, thus leaving the spine stuck for not having succeeded. They finish the regular phase obtaining the classification adjudicating the key of quarters of end, the rival of serious shifts Deportivo Mixco in games of round trip. [51] The first match was played at Armando Barillas Stadium (Escuintla) on 17 November 2016; At 6:00 pm. With a victory of the group escuintleca by 1 to 0. Everything would be defined in the match of return in the Stadium Cementos Progreso]; Resinto where the picture of Mixco does of local, the encounter is disputed 20 November to the 12,00 hs. With a score of 1 to 0 in favor of the locals equaling the series, in the overtime both teams gave everything but failed to make a difference which everything would be defined in the penalty shootings. Unfortunately the set Escuintleca loses by that way by a 5–4 against;[52] Centurion Together with his other teammates start a new tournament with the mentality set to achieve the first objective is to qualify to get into the keys to fight for the title and later To achieve the long-awaited ascent from which they had slipped out of their hands the previous year. The first encounter they do in a condition of visitor in front of Deportivo Iztapa getting the victory, good start for the whole Escuintleto, but ahead, the road would be complicated, such is the case that it is not possible to classify staying in the I walk all the dreams and goals to which they had been drawn, once again empty-handed. As Soccer has those things, which is not known to be waiting around the corner, Paulo Centurion would leave the club leaving a good image, and the recognition and respect on the part of the people Who knew how to appreciate and see the effort made in each game played wearing green colors.

Return to Comunicaciones FC

After 11 years, Centurión returned to Comunicaciones FC, which he left after the 2006-07 season concluded. He was signed to a one-year contract. [53][54]

Apertura Tournament - Closing 2017/2018

Centurión celebrating his first goal at Cremas B

They began the tournament in local conditions debuting against Universidad SC with a 1-0 loss, which was a bad start, and that bad run would stay with the club, because the whole Apertura tournament turned out to be quite difficult. Bad fortune rocked the team, even though the team played well, they still struggled to score goals; and as a result they finished last in the league table. The permanence in the top category was complicated; and for the Closing Tournament they had to fix the situation by achieving the first place to secure the category. Although many did not have faith in the team, the group of players and coaching staff manage to improve the situation in the Clausura Tournament where they eventually managed to finish in first place, securing their permanence in the top category and achieving the classification by the relegation playoff with 1 matchday left. In the final instances they faced Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa FC, playing the first leg Away from home; the result was a 3-1 loss, and The return meeting was played in the Cementos Progreso; Comunicaciones overturned the result by winning 2-0 (3-3 on aggregate, Comunicaciones qualified on away goals) and made it to the semifinal, at the same time getting closer to their goal of winning the championship .[55][56] By the format of the League of the First Division, Comunicaciones won the right for a two legged playoff for the direct promotion, and for this Deportivo Chiantla would be their opponent, and by positions in their respective groups, Comunicaciones would be the home side in the first leg. Comunicaciones lost 2-1 and hope for becoming championship winners was diminishing. [57] [58] The return leg was played in the Estádio Buenos Aires where Chiantla were at home. Chiantla won 2-0; and Municipal were eliminated in the semifinal phase.

Opening Tournament - Closing 2018/2019

Centurión talking to the defensive line in a match

For the next season, the Club renewed Centurión's contract for one more year to continue with the originally planned objective. The objective was to repeat or improve what was done in the previous league tournament, and doing well in the Cup as well. The league debut was against CSD Carchá in a 0-0 draw at home. Centurión met the goal net on the 4th matchdate against Deportivo Sansare, opening the scoring to 1-0, with a final result 2-0. Everything was going well, and he scored again in the next game in a 5- 1 victory away to Universidad SC.[59] Overall it was a difficult tournament for the club who achieves the first goal of qualifying to the finals In 4th place. In the quarterfinals they faced Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa FC, on 28 November at Cementos Progreso the first game is played with a score of 1-1, leaving the key open for the return game.[60] On 2 December the return leg is played with Santa Lucia as the local team. Santa Lucia beat them 3-1, and once more they were eliminated.[61]
