Air Gear (エア・ギア) is a shōnen manga and anime by the mangaka Oh! great.

Air Gear has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine since 2002. Currently, 15 tankōbon have been released in Japan by Shounen Magazine Comics.

The Air Gear manga was licensed for release in the United States by Del Rey and the first volume was released on July 25, 2006.[2] Subsequent volumes will be released every three months. The manga was uncensored when it was released, although the cover artwork for the second volume featured minor censorship (the content of the volume itself remained uncensored).[3]

ADV Films announced over the October 20, 2006 weekend at Oni-Con, that they had licensed the Air Gear anime for release in the USA.[4] The first volume was released on February 6, 2007.[5] Surprisingly, they will be releasing the Japanese home video version, or the uncensored edition. On January 3rd, 2007, IGN released a special sneak peek of Episode 1 of the English Dub.[6]

The series has also been made into a musical[7], which made its debut on January 7, 2007 and ran until January 21, 2007. Performances for the Air Gear musical were held in Tokyo at the Space Zero Theater and in Osaka at the Theater BRAVA. The cast featured Kamakari Kenta and KENN, reprising their roles from the anime respectively as Ikki and Kazu with Masaki Kaji (who had also starred with KenKen and KENN in The Prince of Tennis Musicals), RUN&GUN, Kenjiro Tsuda etc. as their co-stars.[8]

Air Treck

Air Trecks, or AT for short, are a brand of fictional inline skates in the Air Gear series. Air Treck riders who mod their skates to go beyond the preset limit are often referred to as storm riders.

Story

Minami “Ikki” Itsuki, is a student and a delinquent. Also known as the “Unbeatable Babyface,” Ikki is the leader of the youth gang by the name of “East Side Gunz.” Upon his return home after being humiliated by a street gang of Storm Riders called the Skull Saders Ikki discovers a secret hidden from him by his benefactors, the Noyamano sisters. The sisters belong to a group of Storm Riders who go by the team name of Sleeping Forest. Keen on helping Ikki to regain his confidence and pride, they supply him with a pair of Air Trecks (abbreviated as “AT”). Ikki eventually settles his grudge with the Skull Saders, but in the process he receives more than the simple satisfaction of revenge. Determined to experience the sensation of “flight” for as long as he can, our headstrong protagonist is quickly sucked into the mysterious, yet irresistible world of Air Treck.

Apparently a child favoured by the wind, Ikki faces numerous challenges and obstacles in his journey towards his destination. Will his wings endure the trials of punishment, or will they shatter like Icarus’ imitations constructed from wax...?

Characters and Teams

Brief descriptions of important characters and Air Treck teams can be found below.

Template:Spoiler

Kogarasumaru (小烏丸)

Team Status: B Class

Kogarasumaru was founded by the protagonist Minami Itsuki with his friends Kazu, Buccha, Onigiri, Agito, and Akito. They are central to the story of Air Gear.

The Noyamano Family/Sleeping Forest (眠りの森)

Team Status: A Class

Sleeping Forest was originally created by Takeuchi Sora in order to collect the eight Kings and prepare for the appearance of the Sky King. At the current time, Sleeping Forest is under command of Ringo, the current Thorn King, and it is rumored that it still is composed of eight Kings.

Behemoth(ベヒーモス)

Team status: D Class - Disbanded

Behemoth was a large AT team, that was defeated in a parts war with Kogarasumaru. at that time the leader (Udō Akira) was taken into custody by wind swat.

Genesis(創世神)

Team Status: A-Class

Genesis is a very large AT team, with over 375 skilled Storm Riders(including four kings), headed by Simca. Control of this team is eventually turned over to Minami Itsuki.

Tool Toul To (道具屋)

Team Status: The Tool Toul To was originally created to assist the kings with their regalia. They are a completely neutral group and will assist any king regardless of which side they are on. Each king is assigned a tuner which is their personal mechanic. Since the regalias can be won from a king in battle the new king would have trouble using the regalia since the body structure of the old king might differ from the new one. Thats where the tool toul tool come in, the new king will be assigned a tuner who will adjust the regalia to the kings personal style. The relationship between a tuner and a king is deep. They say it goes beyond the relationship of lovers.

  • Makigami Ine (巻上イネ) - Leader of the neutral Link Tuner team "Tool Toul To." Makigami seems to be the heiress of a rich family that is well known in the medical field. Aside from being the Pledge King and the leader of Tool Toul Too, she is the head of a private hospital. She is one of the original members of Sleeping Forest. She is also one of the more frequently over-sexualized characters in the series, as she is usually drawn in extremely tight clothes with her black lingerie showing.
  • Sumeragi Kururu (皇杞 枢) - A relatively new member of the team, Kururu is keen on becoming Ikki's Tuner. Although initially shy around Ikki she becomes devoted to him after witnessing his anger over Simca's attack. She is also the tentative successor for the title of Pledge King/Queen. With new determination she managed to rebuild the 'Wind Regalia', but the strain caused by Ikki's battle with Ringo caused the untuned core wheels to shatter. It is later learned that another member of TTT, who was jealous that Kururu was Ikki's tunner, had switched the rebuilt cores with the old defective cores. Eventually the rebuilt cores were returned but shortly afterwards were stolen by Sleeping Forest.
  • Kanon (奏音) - Assisted Rika and Sora when they were attacked by Gabishi. Kanon is Ringo's Tuner. He takes pride in his intimate knowledge of Ringo's body, and seems to dislike Ikki.
  • Kana (加奈) - Nue's tuner who managed to re-tune Nue's regalia in record time after his initial defeat by Gabishi. She uses a old type writer to monitor Nue's regalia in mid-battle.

Sable Tiger

Team Status: Disbanded (once F class)

The first to challenge Ikki's team. This team occupied the area of the school after the fall of the Yaō. As the Kogarasumaru was in the same place, they soon started a F Class Parts War.

  • Iriya Natsumi - "The Brown Bloody Sword" is the leader of this team. Her special technique is "Moon Walker", which lets her to ride backwards. She thought that she could get an easy win on Ikki because of her technique in addition to that no men would attack a woman from the front. However, Ikki gained a simple victory over her. She got out of the penalty due to the girls, while the rest of the team walked home naked. She later participated as one of the 33 people Ikki had to jump over.

Rez-Boa-Dog

Team Status: Disbanded

Though the Sable Tigers were the first to "officially" be challenged by Ikki, the Rez-Boa-Dogs were the first team Ikki defeated(the Skull Saders skipped out, counting the match as nullified).

  • Inuyama - The leader of the Rez-Boa Dogs. When he heard that number 22 and 19 were defeated he promptly smashed his helmet into theirs. He is friends with Gonzō and wears a helmet shaped in like the head of a Great Dane/Greyhound dog. This helmet both serve has his badge of office and a hammer(by bowing the "nose" of the helmet would hit the target directly in front of Inuyama). Inuyama though may first come off as a generic evil leader but soon his soft side shows. He cares for his team members as well as for the opponent. He is also very honourable. However, despite his good heart, he absolutly despises Simca. He also bears an uncanny resemblance to Ryu of Shaman King in both height and hairstyle.

Gravity Children (重力子)

Team Status: Unknown

Gravity Children is a team of riders consisting of Falko(Old Fang King), Black Ban(Old Thunder King), Dontores(Old Rumble King), and Spit Fire(Current Flame King) and probably others yet to be announced. They initialy helped Sora and Kilik guard the "Tower" and stopped other riders from entering and obtaining the Sky Regalia.

f**k YOU

Other characters

  • Machida Kei (町田 形)- Professional emblem designer (someone who designs emblems for Storm Rider teams) and friend of Shiraume. Like Ume, she makes her own puppets. When Kogarasumaru meet her, she doesn't speak directly to the team but talks through Shiraume.
  • Tomita Mari (富田 毬)- Ikki's homeroom teacher. Young, cute and inexeperienced, she's the perfect object of a junior high school students fantasies. Referred to as Ton-chan by just about everyone and has gotten involved with Kogarasumaru's adventures as an AT-team. A former student at Higashi Junior High-school herself, she's constantly being reprimanded by Orihara Masaya, the academic head of the school and her former teacher. She has a small car that the team used to travel to watch the battle where they first met Akito/Agito. She is constantly paranoid that someone is going to rape her. She also has a habit of doing H-stuff in public due to the aforementioned paranoia and by just doing something(i.e she was "sucking" on a popsicle and her clothes often fall off).
Orihara
Orihara
  • Orihara Masaya (折原 征也)- Academic head of Higashi Junior High-school, constantly tries to discipline Ikki and his team but with little success. He is a seventh degree blackbelt and has sent more than his fair share of vengeful students digging their own graves.
Sora
Sora
  • Takeuchi Sora (武内 空) - First leader of Sleeping Forest. Once known as the man who was closest to being the Sky King. However, six years ago he was betrayed by his teammate Kilik and lost the Wind Regalia as well the use of his legs. During his time as leader of Sleeping Forest, he was romantically involved with Rika but they broke up after Kilik's betreyal. Lately however, it seems that they are getting closer to each other once again. He has three dogs, Stone, Cold and Stunner (in reference to a popular wrestler named Stone Cold Steve Austin). He is training Ikki to be the new Wind King while they are both healing in a hospital. His training for Ikki seems to be full of perverted games such as running on your hands while counting panties. Sora frequently displays this perverted behavior and is punished physically by Rika for doing so, usually in the form of German suplexes.
  • Noyamano Rika (野山野 梨花)- Eldest of the Noyamano sisters, was given responsibility of taking care of Ikki when she was only eight. She acts like the typical older sister and takes care of the family. To support the family, she works as Destler Bartlett, a female pro-wrestler and for most of the early part of the story, during the time when Ikki discovers AT, she's out on a national tour with her wrestling promotion. Later on it is revealed that she used to be Sleeping Forest's Thorn Queen and follower of the Thorn Road (also called the "Sonia Road"). This road utilizes her hip joints as the base of her moves (which are composed of a wide array of kicks that mimic the motions of a thorn whip), however the disadvantage of this road is that this takes quite a toll on her body making her tire easily. Some time ago, she decided to quit AT for good due to the accident that left her boyfriend Sora (then leader of Sleeping Forest) unable to use his legs. She's very much aware of Ikki's talent and fears that Ikki may suffer the same fate as Sora so she tries her best to make him quit AT to the point of challenging him. In the end however, Ikki beats her and she decides instead to help with his training.
  • Wanijima Kaito (鰐島 海人) - Akito/Agito's older brother, a leader of the Wind SWAT team, nicknamed the "Shinjuku Crocodile". He seems to consider his younger brother as his tool yet fears Agito the Fang King at the same time. However under his tough exterior it is evident that Kaito does care for Akito, as he "allowed" Akito to escape after he goes to take something back from Kaito.
Tokudawara Gonzō
Tokudawara Gonzō
  • Tokudawara Gonzō (町田 形} - Former leader of Team Buffalo -- now supports Ikki and his team by joining up with Team Kogarasumaru, in the fight against Yoshitsune on episode 25 (though this only happened in the anime)

Terms

  • Air Treck - Air Trecks are similar to inline skates, but are far more advanced. It allows the user to almost 'fly' and performs difficult techniques which would have been impossible to execute using ordinary roller blades. It is also a very expensive sport that needs regular maintenance. It costs 100,000 yen for a pair of ATs. Each pair of AT has a memory card slotted in and a player is able to 'download' the skills of another player using READ (on cellphones).
  • Air Treck (Ball-Roller type) - First appearance is in chapter 114, worn by Sano Yasuyoshi. The design differs from the common AT in that the wheels are replaced by spherical ball rollers. It is able to achieve a unique walking sensation normal ATs cannot. On the flip side, difficulty in handling the Ball-Roller AT is very high, and its speed and jumping capabilities are lower than wheel ATs. It is also a lot more costly.
  • Storm Riders - This is the name that AT users calls themselves with. Storm Riders are sorted into 6 different levels. All beginners start with the rank F. The highest rank that can be reached is A.
  • The teams - It is fairly exhausting to set up an AT team. A large amount of money is needed to buy the team's clothes and the designing and minting of the emblem. Stickers with the team’s emblem design have to be printed as well to mark out its territory. An AT team also needs to have its own territory where the members can practice their moves.
  • Parts War - These are the battles that Storm Rider teams have with each other when they want AT parts, territories or the Regalia. They also compete in these battles to level their team up to the next level. There are six levels. At the bottom is F while at the top is A. When a team wishes to level itself up, it has to either win a match with a team in higher class or win three times against teams in the same class as itself. To battle, a team needs to bet something. Some teams bet their emblems which when lost will result in the dissolving of the group. For each of the different levels, there are different ways to conduct the Parts Wars.
    • An F-level battle is dash (A race against opponents), E is hurdle (jumping over objects), D is cube (one on one fights in separate areas), C is air (the team stands on poles and try to knock each other off), B is disk (attacking side tries to win points by having the disc keeper reach the goal, while the defending side tries to attack the disk keeper), and A is balloon (teams of 5 fight to reach a balloon first).
  • Road - Each AT user has their own unique road. The roads are markings on any surface left by practicing the techniques. Over time, the markings accumulate and become a road. Each King has their own road as well. For instance, Agito is of the Bloody Road while Spitfire is of the Flame Road. Other roads include the Flash Road, the Thorns Road and the Wings Road. The rest have yet to be revealed.
  • Kings - While there are many different roads, the eight most powerful roads have a single rider that is known as a 'King'. These 'Kings' are the most advanced users in the AT world and they each have their own Regalia, which are proof of their status and strength.
  • Regalia - A Regalia is the proof of a King's positions and chooses its own master. Regalia are incredibly powerful AT parts that each possess a unique design and ability based on the 'road' they represent. For example, the back wheel of Ringo's 'Thorn Regalia' can unravel to create a thorn-like whip, which when coupled with her powerful whip-like kicks are able to do alot of damage. However, damage is dealt to the user each time a Regalia is used as it badly strains the body, especially when it is not adjusted to suit the user properly. If a Regalia is not routinely adjusted, or 'tuned', the massive forces on the Regalia can cause them to shatter.
  • READ - It is a program that can be downloaded to a cellphone. It allows the user to check out the details logged in the memory card of the AT. Details that can be checked include the speed and the level of the techniques performed, as well as the average reaction time, spin radius, max air time and ground speed.
  • Link Tuner - Often abbreviated as Tuners, they are the assistants of the Kings. Every King has their own Tuner. Up until now, 'Toul Tool To' is the only team composed of Tuners. A Tuner's duty is to repair and/or adjust the Regalia of their master.

Kings and roads

'Kings' are the most advanced users in the AT world and they each have their own Regalia which are their proof as 'King'. Though there are many roads in the Air Gear world only the best of those that ride on roads dependant on air can be considered Kings. As such all regalia must use what is known as the "infinity atmosphere", essentially utilizing some part of the air around the King. Though some people can be recognized with having the power of a king you are officially not one without these regalia. There seems to be 8 Kings in Sleeping Forest at the current time, that means there are 6 extra Kings, making a total of 14. Still, only 8 are the "real" kings.

  • There appears to be confusion with regards to the position of Sky King and the Wing Road. The king of the Wing Road is the Wind King. The status of Wind King is not a pre-requisite to becoming the Sky King, however because the Wing Road is considered the "Purest" road most expect the Wing King to become Sky King. For reason(s) yet to be made clear, the unification of all eight Kings of the AT world seems to be essential in the creation of a new Sky King. It is currently assumed that no one has been crowned as the Sky King in the past. Takeuchi Sora was close, but failed due to the betrayal of Kilik. They say that all eight kings would like the one who walks the wing road to be king because they say that all regalia depend on the wind to function.
