Makariv (Ukrainian: Макарів, Russian: Макаров) is an urban-type settlement in Kyiv Oblast (province) of Ukraine. Formerly the administrative center of Makariv Raion until its dissolution in 2020, the town is now part of Bucha Raion. The population of the settlement is 9,589 (2021 est.)[1]. In 2001, the population was 12,042.
History
The town had a Jewish community and had been the center of the Hasidic Makarov dynasty (Makariv being pronounced as "Makarov" in Yiddish).
2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine
On March 2, 2022 the Ukrainian military said that the town had been retaken from Russian forces by the Prince Roman the Great 14th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade and the 95th Air Assault Brigade. Russia had invaded the country the week previously.[2][3]
On March 7, 2022 13 civilians were killed and 5 rescued in air strike on bakery and bread factory ("Макарівський хлібозавод") in Makariv.[4][5]
On March 22, 2022 it was announced by the General Staff of the Armed Ukraine Forces that Makariv had been recaptured from Russian forces. The press release also added that "the Ukrainian flag was raised over the town of Makariv". [6] [7][8]
