Islamic holidays
An Eid is a Muslim religious festival:
- Eid Milad un Nabi, alternate name for Mawlid (مَولِد النَّبِي, "Birth of the Prophet"), the date of observance of the birthday of the Islamic prophet Muhammad
- Eid al-Fitr (عيد الفطر ʿĪd al-Fiṭr, "Feast of Breaking the Fast"), marks the end of the month of Ramadan. Ramadan is the 9th month of the Arabic / Islamic calendar and the month of fasting. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food, drink, sex, arguing, and aggressive behavior. Eid al Fitr is celebrated following the end of Ramadan, on the first day of the month of Shawal (10th month of the Islamic calendar). Muslims celebrate Eid al Fitr by preparing nice food, wearing new clothes, visiting relatives and friends, and giving cash to children.
- Eid al-Adha (عيد الأضحى ʿĪd al-ʾAḍḥā, "Feast of the Sacrifice"), falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, following the day of Arafat during the Muslim pilgrimage to the House of God in Mecca, and lasts for four days until the 13th day.
In addition, Shia Muslims may observe:
- Eid al-Ghadir, an Eid for Shia Muslims which marks the nomination of Ali, Mohammed's cousin, as the successor of Mohammed
- Eid al-Mubahila, an Eid for Shia Muslims which marks the success of Muslims in a peaceful debate with the Christians of the time
- Eid-e-Shuja', an Eid for Shia Muslims which marks the end of the mourning period after the events of Karbala
