Kohl is a German surname derived from the word kohl, meaning cabbage. It tends to originate as an occupational name for a merchant or cultivator of the crops.[1]

Brassica was considered a table luxury by Romans in Antiquity.[2] Manuscript illuminations indicate the prominence of cabbage in the cuisine of the Middle Ages and henceforth.[3]
