Coping Mechanism is the fifth studio album by American musician Willow Smith. The album was released on 7 October 2022 via Roc Nation / Polydor, and shall feature Yves Tumor.[1]

Background

In June 2022, Smith broadcast "Maybe It's My Fault", the first single from her fifth studio album.[2]

In July 2022, Smith published the album art as well as the release date for this work. The following month, the vocalist put out "hover like a GODDESS".[3]

Critical reception

Taylor Mims of Billboard stated that the album is "Willow’s most cohesive and complex work to date" going on to say that "Atop crashing cymbals and sultry bass riffs, Willow belts each song — rife with therapy speak and confessional lyricism — with an angst that can’t be authentically replicated past the age of 25".[4]

Emily Carter of Kerrang! indicated that "Last year’s brilliant lately i feel EVERYTHING full-length was often pigeonholed within the genre and labelled as being at the forefront of its considerable resurgence, despite the album dabbling in everything from indie to emo and alt.rock", and that "This time around, WILLOW was intent on not letting that happen again".[1]

Will Schube of udiscovermusic spoke that "“Curious/Furious” finds Willow tapping back into more conventional pop roots, but doing so while maintaining the flare of her alternative edge" continuing on that "The track explores feelings of physical and mental isolation as the singer and songwriter reflects on the solitary experience of moving through the world, uncertain of what comes next".[5]

Steffanee Wang of Nylon Entertainment emphasized that "CopingMechanism will be built around the angsty, trendy sounds of emo and pop-punk — though it seems new emphasis was placed on the “punk” part of the genre".[3]
