MOS:DIALECT

[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. Legoktm (talk) 03:11, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This was created, with good intentions, as a synonym for MOS:ENGVAR, but it's really not a good idea, because the word dialect implies regional, subnational language patterns, and ENGVAR is meant to operate only at a national level -- we don't, for example, recognize articles as being written in Southern US dialect. EEng 05:21, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep as is British English and American English are still dialects of English. "Dialect" can refer to regional varieties as well as national ones. A helpful target page to editors. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 21:57, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"Dialect" can refer to regional varieties as well as national ones is precisely the reason MOS:DIALECT is misleading as a redirect to MOS's guideline on national varieties, because that guideline recognizes national varieties only, not regional ones. EEng 19:15, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • @EEng: Do you have a preferred outcome - would you want this deleted, or do you know of a better target? Jay 💬 08:58, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It should absolutely be deleted. I'm one of those people who hangs around MOS a lot, and participates in a lot of the discussions there, as well as discussions elsewhere that hinge on MOS and its interpretation. Tussles over varieties of English are a recurring headache, and the last thing we need is anything that promotes confusion over how those are treated on Wikipedia i.e. national varieties of English are recognized, but not regional ones. The word dialect simply carries too much potential connotation of the latter, and thus promotes confusion. I understand that the editor who created this redir meant well, by creating a redir that seems mnemonic, but it reminds people of the wrong concept, so it's going to hurt not help. Agricultura

The result of the discussion was speedy keep. Withdrawn. I somehow missed the section that specifically mentioned the target. I legitimately don't know what WP:BEFORE I did here that I somehow missed that, but it's troutable. (non-admin closure) TartarTorte 14:40, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Initial reason for deletion proposal: this is WP:RLOTE as there is no inherent connection between latin and agriculture. Looking at the article history, this is very weird and seemingly was supposed to be moved to wiktionary in 2005 at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Agricultura, but it's unclear what happened. Not mentioned in target article. This redirect previously targeted Bunny hopping#Wave, but then that section was removed and then Bunny hopping was subject to a WP:BLAR to Strafe-jumping#Bunny hopping (but it's not mentioned there either) via this edit in 2016. Steel1943 (talk) 19:04, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete as obscure, and no suitable target. The page history of Bunny hopping mentions air-dodging in the context of wavedashing, but there is no article that mentions that term aither. Jay 💬 20:04, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Delete per WP:RDAB. The properly spaced variant, Explode (song), exists and targets the same target as the nominated redirect. Steel1943 (talk) 18:37, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Horizon (IT system)

The result of the discussion was delete. Legoktm (talk) 03:13, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This redirect may be either ambiguous or unclear, but not sure which one (if any). For one, there could be subjects mentioned at Horizon (disambiguation)#Computers and computer science which could be referred to as an "IT system", but I'm not sure. For two, in my time and experience with redirect maintenance, this is the first time I've ever seen the disambiguator "IT system", so I'm not sure if it's meant to represent anything specific that could not also be called "software". However, this redirect does have incoming links that specifically refer to the subject identified by the target of this redirect. So, all in all ... not sure which is the best course here ("retarget to Horizon (disambiguation)#Computers and computer science", "keep", "delete"). The result of the discussion was no consensus. Multiple opinions and suggestions but no clear agreement on what to do here; and the fact that there was no participation after the second relist made me unsure of relisting for a third time. (non-admin closure) CycloneYoris talk! 07:49, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Indian was not the only place with congressional elections in 2022. With the capitalization, it is not clear this means National Congress which is still ambiguous. Delete as too vague. MB 02:47, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Who calls it "En bee ay"? This kind of redirect is absolutely unnecessary. 747pilot (talk) 01:31, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Phonetic sleeping of the initialism. Doesn't mean it should exist. oknazevad (talk) 02:15, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete - searching for "en bee ay -wikipedia" doesn't turn up any usage anywhere. It seems as though "en bee aye" may refer to a couple of probably non-notable things but none are actually the NBA but rather plays on words. A7V2 (talk) 00:32, 3 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
