Successful neurosurgeon Scott Harmon ( Michael Chiklis) is on trial. Scott's son Devin is suspended from school for making a threatening social media post against another student who had been bullying him. While Devin's mother Lynn (Jill Hennessy) offers to transfer him to a private school, Scott does not think it would not solve Devin's behavioral problems. Devin expresses his wish to get rid of the neighbor's irritating dog, making Scott suspicious when the dog goes missing soon after. Scott overhears Devin talking on the phone in his room with another boy named Jasper about trying to get money for an unknown purpose, and then confronts him about the dog's disappearance. Devin storms out of the room and Scott discovers a secret diary, where Devin expresses dark and murderous thoughts towards his classmates. Scott believes that Devin is planning an act of mass violence, and decides to take him camping in a local state park with the intention of killing him there. Devin agrees to go on the trip when Scott promises him the money he wanted. On the trip, Scott is about to kill Devin by pushing him off a cliff, but cannot bring himself to do it. Devin tells Scott that he wanted the money for a two-month trip to Iceland, and that he feels guilty about his violent thoughts and will see a therapist upon return. Scott and Devin return home, and it is revealed that Devin had nothing to do with the dog's disappearance. Soon after, Scott sees on the news that a mass shooting has happened at Devin's high school. He heads to the school and finds out that Devin and Jasper are the shooters. Scott talks to Devin, who is holding several students hostage. Devin reveals that he knows his father planned to kill him. Additionally, the Iceland trip was a ruse; Devin and Jasper actually wanted money to buy guns and ammunition. Devin then commits suicide. Scott is accused of financing a mass murder and is ultimately acquitted. Cast : Michael Chiklis, Jill Hennessy, Robert Wisdom, Evan Marsh, and Oakes Fegley

Production

In May 2021, it was announced Fox had given a straight-to-series order to Accused produced by Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa and David Shore based on the 2010 BBC One series of the name.[5] In November 2022, it was announced Accused would air as part of Fox's midseason schedule.[6]

Reception

Critical response

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 64% approval rating with an average rating of 7.3/10, based on 14 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "While Accused is yet another variation on a very familiar theme, its anthology structure offers enough flexibility and star power for some compelling courtroom stories."[7] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 60 out of 100 based on 12 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[8]

Max Gao of The A.V. Club gave the series a B and said, "Offers a fresh take on the typical legal procedural."[9] The Hollywood Reporter's Angie Han wrote, "Without much insight to share, catharsis to offer or even a particularly interesting tone or style to grab us, Accused becomes just another so-so crime drama in an ocean teeming with them."[10] Writing for The Wall Street Journal, John Anderson stated, "Accused may be out to provoke, but it scores more hits than misses. And its sins of indulgence are ultimately well-intended."[11]

Ratings

The premiere episode had more than 11.3 million viewers and a 2.3 rating among the 18-49 demographic in the three days after its premiere on multi-platforms. It is the highest-rated and most-watched debut on Fox in 3 years.[12]
