Usage

[edit]

I made some changes to the "Usage" section. For one thing, I added I Will Buy You a New Life by Everclear which features a prominent organ part, likely played on a Vox Continental (credited as "Vox Organ" in So Much for the Afterglow#Personnel) and I also found a disambiguation link Keep on Dancing so I fixed that link so that it links to that specific song. I'll try to find a source for the Vox Continental used on the Everclear song--67.162.228.68 (talk) 04:51, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

  • Are we still BritEng enough to say "transistorised" instead of 'transistorized"?
Good point
  • On that theme, maybe "musical equipment manufacturer Vox" could be "English" or "British" depending on how nationalistic you're feeling?
Personally, I go with "British" but then I grew up near London while my family comes from near the A4061, so this may be a personal viewpoint
  • If you link transistor, ought you link oscillator?
Don't see why not
  • " in Dartford, Kent; " perhaps Dartford in southeast England? I know it's the garden of England and all, but it would help give it context to our more geographically-challenged readers.
Hmmm *sucks teeth a few times* .... if we really want to avoid county arguments, we could just say Dartford, as we're then not linking to a redirect
  • "Single Manual Vox Continental" is the infobox caption but that capitalised name isn't used in the article.
Should be in lower case, "single manual" is a description
  • "used by The Beatles, The..." shouldn't all these be "the Beatles, the ... " etc?
Definitely
  • "Korg bought" again, perhaps "Japanese manufacturer Korg bought"?
Done, personally I think it's obvious but then I am used to Korg and Vox gear
  • Should the 2017 variant be reflected in the infobox, e.g. "1962–1971, 2017"?
I suppose it should; though I personally think the 2017 version is nothing like the 60s one, that's POV
  • Forgive my ignorance, but the infobox also says "Polyphony Full" but it's not clear to me what that means nor how it's covered in the article.
"Full polyphony" means that you can play every note on the keyboard at once and get a sound. The description of the oscillators and divider circuitry explains how it can have full polyphony, and I don't believe it's original research to go from one to the other. I think the real problem is {{Infobox synthesizer}} isn't designed for pre-synth vintage keyboards and so the fields have got to be jiffled a bit.
  • Ah, I found "single manual Continental" but manual isn't capitalised.
Indeed. "Manual" shouldn't be capitalised (well, at least not in the middle of a sentence) because it's a common term, not part of the instrument brand
  • Can we link "naturals" and "sharps".
Sure
  • "16'" what does that mean? 16 feet?
Yes. This is standard nomenclature on both classical / church organs and modern organs like the Hammond. See organ stop.
  • "circuit, that" I see no need for that comma.
Removed
  • "lowest note, C" link?
Didn't know we had an article on that - done
  • "in Dartford, Kent in" comma after Kent.
  • "in Rayleigh, Essex while" similar after Essex.
Am I looking in the right place - these both have commas after them?
  • You link Dartford and Rayleigh, what's wrong with Erith??
Well, it's full of mudflats, downwind from London, and stuck out of the way of the Dartford Crossing and the Blackwall Tunnel, making .... oh, you mean link it - done
  • General: do we have any information on roughly how much these cost? You talk about the budget Jaguar but I've got no idea if that was £100 while the regular was £500 or whatever.
  • "increase supply a licensing" I'd pop that spare comma after "supply" here.
Done
  • "289cc" we normally have spaces between numbers and units.
Done
  • Call ignorant (by all means) but I don't know what a "celeste" is.
The article is at celesta for reasons I don't understand - linked
  • "didn't" avoid contractions.
Done
  • "numbers show 9,100" indicate rather than show.
Done
  • "regarded" by whom?
Rewrote to say "The original Vox Continental is still used by collectors of vintage instruments." which is less POV
  • I would link germanium. I love flowers.
Linked (and I'll assume that's a joke)
  • "required to be returned" what do you mean by "returned" in this case? I guess like "re-tuned" rather than "returned" to manufacturer.
That's a typo - well spotted, fixed
  • "Vox Continental internal circuits and components" sexy pic.
:-)
  • "which makes servicing easy." reads like a review, perhaps "which facilitates servicing"?
Changed to "which allows servicing without having to dismantle the instrument"
  • "by the Beatles' John Lennon, " overlinked.
Fixed
  • "Piano Bass " why is that capitalised?
It's a proper noun, the Fender Rhodes Piano Bass. Random source here
  • "Paul Revere & the Raiders" small t in the.
Fixed
  • "'60s " -> "1960s".
Tweaked
  • What's a Farfisa?
Good catch, I thought Farfisa was mentioned earlier, but turns out not
  • "didn't" avoid contractions.
Done
  • "Dammers[45] and" put ref at end of sentence.
Done
  • "garage band The Horrors" the article describes them as a "rock" band.
I don't think it's important to mention the genre myself, so removed
  • " pp. 148,167" space after comma. Check others.
Done
  • "p. 154-156" pp. and en-dash.
Done
  • "Vox - Combo Organ Heaven" en-dash.
I've run the "Fixed dashes using a script" script but it doesn't appear to have done anything, can you check?
  • "Continental in detail: www.reinout.nl" bit linkrotty.
Fixed, I think
Definitely, so tweaked. Really, the article should have more categories, but they aren't my strong point. Normally, somebody comes along and adds a bunch.

That's it, a really interesting read, thanks. On hold. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 13:18, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the review. I've addressed everything except the original sales prices, for which I need to wander over to the bookshelf and get Classic Keys to see what it says. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:41, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, good so far, can you ping me if/when £ are included? Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 15:00, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@The Rambling Man: (ec) Okay, I've popped some prices in, albeit in US sales figures, and - gosh - it's an eye opener. The 1965 Vox Jaguar costs, adjusted for inflation, about the same as a full-sized Nord Stage today. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:01, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Lovely, I really enjoyed the article, and I think it's up to snuff, so promoting. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 15:16, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the review, if by the end of it, I say "I didn't know that" or "it's an eye opener" despite having improved the article extensively, it's a good review. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:22, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
