"Galactic archaeology"

[edit]

Unless I'm mistaken, "Galactic archaeology" is the study of the formation of the Milky Way Galaxy, hence "Galactic" (adjective for the Milky Way Galaxy). The first reference given, Astronomy Magazine, doesn't discuss "galactic archaeology", however it does use a playful title "Galactic Archaeology", without actually covering the field of "Galactic archaeology". All the references except the first one deal with the Milky Way Galaxy. The first one (Astronomy Magazine) only deals with distant galaxies.

Note that "Galactic astronomy" is the study of the Milky Way Galaxy, not the study of galaxies. 65.93.12.101 (talk) 02:57, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. This stub may be headed for the can. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:54, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think the term seems to be used mainly by journalists and not practicing astronomers, even colloquially. The word "archeology" refers principally to studying human histories, so I'm not sure this is an appropriate stand-alone article. I think what the term may be referring to is galactic history or galactic evolution. However, I think that if you have enough sources that use the term "galactic archeology," you might insert that into an established article.Astrocog (talk) 16:34, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, apparently, people in the field are using the term. In fact a whole conference (see [1]) was dedicated to this field in 2009.TR 08:19, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My own experience can't be the judge of notability, so I went to ADS, the astrophysics database service. It lists 38 abstracts containing either the term "galactic archeology" or "galactic archaeology," from the past 19 years. Some of the abstracts are for peer-reviewed publications, so I think that lends some support to the inclusion of "galactic archaeology" as a page. Since Anna Frodesiak is vested in the stub, I'll suggest that she check out the ADS listings for [galactic archaeology] and [galactic archeology"], which will help provide sources for the article.Astrocog (talk) 12:11, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This should be a redirect

[edit]

Please help. What's the technical term for Galactic archaeology? This should redirect there, right? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:39, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
