Notes on content deleted for being unverifiable

[edit]

The following pieces of information were deleted because they were either uncited or cited to an unpublished primary source (such as birth certificates). But they should be restored if they can be properly verified:

  • Date of birth of 6 October 1866
  • Date of death of 1 July 1931
  • born at Saffron Walden, Essex
  • father was an ironmonger's assistant
  • re Love in Earnest: "The dedicatees of other individual poems, referred to only by their initials, can be identified in many cases from the school register." This was cited to The Centenary Register of Rydal School 1985 ed. G. Mayall & J. Pepper. Which might count as a published source, but regardless this inference is WP:OR

Reviving from deletion

[edit]

I'm sending this back to mainspace, as I think I've addressed the issues raised at AfD that led to this article being deleted. In particular, I've removed a bunch of content that was unverifiable, relying on unpublished sources or WP:OR. I've also added citations to a number of additional RS that talk about Nicholson, including Gay Novels of Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth, and The Secret Life of Oscar Wilde. It's true that the amount of coverage of Nicholson in these sources is not extensive, but I think it's important to remember the motivating principle behind notability: Information on Wikipedia must be verifiable; if no reliable, independent sources can be found on a topic, then it should not have a separate article.

The article in its current state is more than stub length (~700 words), and pretty punctiliously cited, so I don't think it can be said that there should be no article on the subject because there's insufficient verifiable information that can be included. Also, this article's subject is mentioned in no less than 9 other mainspace articles, so I think having an article that can be wikilinked to when referring to Nicholson will be doing a service to readers.
