The seventeenth season Criminal Minds was announced on January 12, 2023, and serves as a renewal ("second season") to Criminal Minds: Evolution, the name of the continuation of the main series.[1][2][3]
Filming and production for the seventeenth season of Criminal Minds officially commenced on January 18, 2024.[4]
On January 17, 2024, Josh Stewart, a long-time actor on the show, announced that he would not be returning for the seventeenth season.[5]
Fans have speculated that Matthew Gray Gubler may be returning to the show[6], having not been present in the revival (season 16) due to schedule conflicts.[7] During a September 29 appearance on The Six O'Clock Show, Gubler has expressed that his willingness to return: "Of course! I would be honored. I would absolutely love that. They did a newer spin-off of the show, but it was filming during a time when I was shooting something else. But I can't wait — hopefully it will soon work out."[8]
