I am baffled as to how scholars have concluded that a man who seemed to always refer to himself as either "George W. Cutter" or "G.W. Cutter" came to be known as "George Washington Cutter." There may be some basis, but after spending many hours researching the man and his tragic life, I have not found the source. When I embarked upon a study of his life more than ten years ago, I expected to find that his full name was "George Washington Cutter" since that was the name used in encyclopedias. What I discovered, however, was that newspapers in his hometown of Terre Haute, Indiana, referred to him as "George Wales Cutter." I made note of it but still did not alter my view until I found a letter containing a biographical sketch of Cutter written by his cousin to Indiana historian William English. It referred to G.W. Cutter as "George Wales Cutter." Brismile 16:03, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
