Keith Lam (Chinese: 林欣傑; born in 1980) is a Hong Kong new media artist.[1] He is the co-founder and artistic director of Dimension Plus.[2]

Lam presented Moving Mario at the 11th Microwave International New Media Arts Festival, Hong Kong, in 2007, and was awarded Honorary Mentions in Interactive Arts at PRIX Ars Electronica, Linz, Austria, in 2008.[3][4][5][6][7] He was the recipient of the Young Artist Award at the 3rd Hong Kong Arts Development Awards, Hong Kong, the same year.[8] In 2013, Lam's work One Day Social Sculpture was awarded Art Division Jury Selections in Interactive Art at the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival, Tokyo, Japan.[9]

Early life and education

Lam received a scholarship to attend New York University in 2000 and a subsidy to further his education in New Media Arts at Hong Kong Art School.[10] He joined the School of Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong as a Research Assistant and was appointed as a full-time teaching staff member from 2004 to 2009.[6][7] In 2005, he obtained Master of Science in Electronic Information Engineering at the same university.

Early 2009, Lam became a full-time artist and co-founded Dimension Plus with Taiwanese curator Escher Tsai, a new media art team based in Hong Kong and Taiwan focusing on art creation and curation.[2] In late 2023, Dimension Plus was selected as one of the venue partners of East Kowloon Cultural Centre for the period of 2024 to 2026 in Hong Kong.[11]

Lam established LAB by Dimension Plus in 2013, a fab lab that promotes digital fabrication in art and design creation.[12] After 3 years, the lab expanded its operations by co-establishing a new composite space known as common room & co, located on Tai Nan Street in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong.[13][14] LAB by Dimension Plus continued to expand in 2018 when Lam developed and integrated it into a design portal named openground.[15][16]

Over the years, Lam has also held numerous teaching positions as a consultant and visiting lecturer in various institutions, including Hong Kong Design Institute, Hong Kong Art School, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi), and many others. From 2016 to 2019, Lam served as Visiting Associate Professor at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.

Works

Lam’s body of work encompasses diverse media including sculpture, installation and performance, through which he delves into the intricate yet interconnected relationship between technology, humanity, and nature. Venturing beyond the boundaries of art and technology, Lam transcends the sensory experiences in his art-making. He constantly challenges and transforms one’s conventional notions of perception through a masterful interplay of various artistic elements.[17][18][19][20]

One of Lam's notable works, Soundscape of Body (2018) exemplifies his approach which involves staging the flow of energy through bodies, and transforms the visual and tactile senses into thought-provoking artistic expressions that encourage viewers to reassess their perception of art.[21] The work was created for the HKU Body Donation Day 2018 of the LKS Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong.

The Seasons Field (2023) commissioned by Hong Kong Museum of Art, is a site-specific installation that draws inspiration from the paintings of Xie Zhiliu and Chen Peiqiu, which depicted the beauty of nature.[22] The installation utilises Al algorithms and blends various media and art forms, such as digitalisation and analogy to create a new canvas. An immersive panoramic view of the four seasons superimposed onto a paddy field provides viewers on an emotional and sensory journey through cyclical nature of the landscape.

Curatorial projects

Lam has been actively involved in a diverse range of curatorial projects both independently and with Dimension Plus. These projects include Project Playaround, Hong Kong (2023)[23], Hylozoism: An Arts & Technology Exhibition, HKDI Gallery, Hong Kong (2022)[24], and Sensory Canvas, Ming Contemporary Art Museum, Shanghai, China (2019).[25]

Project Playaround, Hong Kong (2023) is a comprehensive programme fosters collaboration, innovation, and creativity among performing and media artists.[23] It is an extended version of the Playaround Workshop that was held in Taipei, Taiwan in 2007 and supported by the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme[26], the programme is led by Crystal Jow and Ei Wada with thirty participating artists. It includes a series of events, such as workshops, seminars, exhibitions, performances, school visits, and an online portal.

Hylozoism: An Arts & Technology Exhibition, HKDI Gallery, Hong Kong (2022) is an exhibition co-curated with Hong Kong curator Joel Kwong that seeks to explore the impact of human intervention and technology on nature in the context of arts and technology.[24] The exhibition features an array of thought-provoking artwork, ranging from depictions of scenic landscapes to neo-nature subjects by five local and international artists, namely Living Architecture Systems Group/ Philip Beesley, Keith Lam, Ellen Pau, Ryuichi Sakamoto X Daito Manabe, and fuse*.
