Distinction?

I'm not disputing the term nor the importance of the concept, but if the practice being described is somehow different from the very common practice of discount-based incentivization ("First month free!" "New customer discount!") which has been widespread since time immemorial, it seems like the distinction should be drawn clearly. It's not obvious to me from the article as it stands.
