Why?

[edit]

Reason for move? --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 08:26, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not at all convinced Ngerulmud is the capital of Palau

[edit]

None of the sources quoted here back up Ngerulmud being the capital of Palau.

The first source from the US Department of State quotes Melekeok as the capital. It quotes the population as 391, which is the population of Melekeok State, suggesting the entire state is the capital not the tiny site of Ngerulmud.

The second source, the inaugural address, merely quotes the address of the new Capitol Building, Ngerulmud in the state of Melekeok. This does not make Ngerulmud the capital city, it doesn't even say whether Ngerulmud is a village or merely a site. Likewise the third source only gives an address for a building.

The fourth source - google earth completely contradicts what has been said in this article and puts Melekeok as the capital, it doesn't even acknowledge the existence of Ngerulmud, from what I can work out it is either a site or that tiny village adjacent to the capital. In addition, Google Earth comes up with a blank when one searches for Ngerulmud. Therefore, Google Earth should be removed as a source.

The following sources quote Melekeok as the capital.

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ps.html http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/1840.htm (US Department of State)

Just to note, I've provided no evidence to say Ngerulmud isn't the capital, only clarified the lack of evidence in the sources that have been used previously. The only reliable sources I've found quote Melekeok as the capital. I'd really like some clarification on this point. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.6.71.1 (talk) 15:08, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Same situation as Saipan (municipality) and Capital Hill (settlement), Majuro (municipality) and Delap (settlement), Pago Pago and Fagatogo, South Tarawa and Bairiki, and some more. In many sources not settlement but administrative unit is listed as capital. But settlement exist and in fact this settlement is capital. Aotearoa (talk) 20:53, 20 December 2010 (UTC) P.S. Adress of the Senate on official website: The Senate of the Seventh Olbiil Era Kelulau, Palau National Capitol Building, Ngerulmud, Republic of Palau 96940 and The Senate of the Eighth Olbiil Era Kelulau, National Government of the Republic of Palau, Palau National Capitol Building Ngerulmud, Melekeok State, Republic of Palau, and other adresses [1], [2], [3] – in all: Ngerulmud, Palau 96939 (for comparison adress of other Ministry [4]: Koror, Palau 96940), in this bill Ngerulmud is listed as same place as Koror ("...at the Supreme Court buildings in Koror and Ngerulmud"). So, Palau Government unambiguously treated Ngerulmud as same settlement as Koror. Aotearoa (talk) 21:24, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the sources. I don't understand why the sources outside of Palau state otherwise, especially since they're generally of US backing (since they have strong ties with Palau). Is it just because the settlements are so tiny that the administrative divisions are often quoted as capitals? Or is there some greater connection between settlement and state - like Washington/District of Columbia? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.6.71.1 (talk) 14:24, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion, the U.S. sources report as a capital not towns (or villages) but the smallest administrative unit. In almost all cases it is the same, but with the exception of the smallest countries and territories - so why the CIA World Factbook listed as the capital of Northern Mariana Islands municipality of Saipan, not Capital Hill village, same in KiribatiTarawa is listed, not Bairiki, and same in American SamoaPago Pago not Fagatogo (Fagatogo is listed as the capital in the Constitution of American Samoa, so in this case there is no any doubt). It is rather a question of the definition of capital – whether it is the settlement, or perhaps the administrative area covering this settlement. Aotearoa (talk) 16:45, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, I was triying to understand why the french WP stated this town to be the Palaos' Capital. No explanation, it is surely not right. Please refer to UN sources [5] . Whatever on this site, french langage datas are not up-to-date, in all the officials french sites, [6], [7] the capital is stated to be Melekeok too. I'm just guessing, but perhaps those small localities are just that and not incorporated cities, so the sources list the division they're in... Smarkflea (talk) 22:29, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for move of capital

[edit]

Does anyone have any information on WHY the capital was moved from Koror to Melekeok? I've been looking for anything I can find and nothing says anything about the reason or purpose of the move, only thing I can find are questions as to whether the capital is Melekeok or Ngerulmud.

All I have is a personal guess that (given that Melekeok seems no more unique an area than the rest of the island and the new capital building stands fairly alone) the government may be trying to construct a new (possibly planed) capital away from established population centers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.202.113.212 (talk) 01:41, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Because constitution has ordered it: Article XIII, Section 11. "The provisional capital shall be located in Koror; provided, that not later than ten (10) years after the effective date of this Constitution, the Olbiil Era Kelulau shall designate a place in Babeldaob to be the permanent capital."
