First female conductor of major US orchestra issue

[edit]

I removed the text because people in Colorado can counter-argue that Marin Alsop became music director of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in 1993, i.e. before Falletta took up her Buffalo post in 1999, and they would defend their orchestra's "major" status. I am nowhere near either city, so I have no vested interest in this issue. The point is that this issue will not be settled here on wikipedia and can potentially led to edit wars, because it is rather touchy. I believe the American phrase is: "Don't go there".
