Rishi Bankim Chandra College is a general degree college located in Naihati, West Bengal, India. It offers undergraduate courses in arts, commerce and sciences. The college also offers PG courses in English and Zoology. It is affiliated to West Bengal State University.[1]
History
A couple of months after Independence, on November 2, 1947, a clan of eminent personalities, educationists and visionaries of Naihati (Barrackpore Subdivision, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal) sat together and came in agreement of setting up a college after the hallowed name of Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the prophet who gave the country the National Song. Although the vision of these persons was far ahead of their time, still there should be no gainsaying the fact that, Naihati, being the birth place of the Rishi, could not be a second choice for hosting such an endeavour.
At the very beginning, Rishi Bankim Chandra College did not have a space of its own. Classes started at the building of Naihati Mahendra High School on January 15, 1948, in the evening hours. This the day has ever been observed as the college Foundation Day. In June 1948, the college was shifted to its present premises, situated within a furlong from Rishi Bankims ancestral home at Kantalpara (at the eastern side of Naihati railway station), as the then Executive Committee purchased the present plot of land from Medland Bose & Co. a labour-contractor firm that used to use the land as a transit point for coolies destined mainly to the north-east tea gardens.
The college boasts of being acknowledged by the UGC for its untiring service to the nation for over fifty years. Today the college has affiliation from West Bengal State University of for Honours and General (BA & BSc Hons & General) undergraduate studies in as many as fourteen (14) subjects, namely, Bengali, English, Sanskrit, Hindi, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Electronics, Chemistry, Botany & Zoology and UG General course in Commerce.
One incident that needs to be underlined in the illustrious traits of the college for the last fifty-six years is that, for the sake of better management and more intensive monitoring of the value-based education, the college was trifurcated on July 13, 1984 and two more colleges with independent entities, namely, Rishi Bankim Chandra College for Women and Rishi Bankim Chandra Evening College, were born.
