The Battle of Calugareni was one of the most important battles in the history of medieval Romania. It took place on 13 August 1595 , between the wallachian army lead by Michael the Brave and the ottoman army lead by Sinan Pasha.Michael was also helped by the hungarian comander Albert Kiraly. The numbers of the wallachian army numbered probably about 25 000 men, while the ottomans had more than 150 000 men (note that many if not most of them did actually not take part in this battle). The begining of the battle found the ottomans rushing trough the mudy marches of the river Neajilov, and capturing the cannons of Michael, whith the ianisaryes charging from behind routing the wallachians.Howewer, Michael, taking an personal example and leading personally the cavalry, rallied the wallachians and succsesfully counter-attacked re-capturing the lost cannons, and driving the ottomans to run on a small bridge over the marches. While running on the bridge, panick broke out trough the ottoman ranks, Sinan Pasha fell down, loosing two of his teets, and beeing carried back into the camp by one of his slaves. The casualtyes are estimated at least then 1000 men lost by the wallachians, while the ottoman casualties where about 10 to 15 000 men.Despite the victory, Michael the Brave, heaving little troops to resist a full scale battle , had reatreated to the winter camp of Stoienesti (he hoped of getting reinforcements from Transilvania or the Austrian Empire, leaving now the country into the hand of the turks.
