German map showing Jewish executions carried out by Einsatzgruppe A. - Estonia is shown as "Judenfrei".

Judenrein and Judenfrei (German: free of Jews) were Nazi terms to designate an area free of Jewish presence.[1] The words bear slightly different connotations; while Judenfrei merely refers to "freeing" Europe of all of its Jewish citizens, Judenrein (literally "clean of Jews") demands that any trace of Jewish blood be removed as an impurity.[2]

Areas that were proclaimed judenrein

Establishments, villages, cities, and regions were declared Judenrein after they were ethnically cleansed of Jews.[3][4]

Other uses

Judenfrei was first used in Germany in the 19th century.
