Carlos Marmol (born October 14, 1982 in Bonao, Dominican Republic) is a current pitcher in Major League Baseball who plays for the Chicago Cubs. Carlos has become a cult favorite among the fans at Wrigley Field who have deemed him the "Wild Thing" due to the combination of velocity and movement in his pitches.
Major League Career
Carlos made his major league debut on June 4, 2006 against the St. Louis Cardinals in a relief appearance. He pitched two scoreless innings and gave up only one hit while striking out three. He was actually very dominant to be a first year rookie He made his second appearance of his career against the Houston Astros where he again pitched two innings and struck out three batters. Again he was very dominant and showed Chicago Cubs pitching staff he deserved to be on this team and that he was for real
After Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood was placed on the disabled list for the second time of the season, Marmol was called on to make a spot start due to his efforts against the Cardinals and Astros. He joined Rich Hill, Ángel Guzmán, Sean Marshall, and Jae Kuk Ryu as one of the five Cubs rookies to make a start for the 2006 Chicago Cubs campaign. On June 11 against the Cincinnati Reds, he had an excellent outing in his first Major League start. He allowed just one run on two hits, struck out seven and walked three in an eventual 9-3 Cubs victory. As of August 1, 2006, Marmol has a 4-4 record with a 4.39 ERA in 11 games (9 starts), covering 53 1/3 innings pitched. He has struck out 46 batters and walked 40.
Marmol returned to the major leagues in 2007 as a relief pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. Due to an injury to Cubs closer Ryan Dempster, Marmol was called upon to pitch in the ninth inning of a game against the Colorado Rockies on June 27, 2007[1]. He pitched a scoreless frame, recording 2 strikeouts, for his first major league save. As of September 24, 2007, he had the best earned run average at 1.23 in Major League Baseball. He is known for his nasty slider. He is also among the league-leaders in strikeouts per innings pitched.
