John E. Peterson (born December 25, 1938) is a Republican politician from the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. Since 1997, he has represented the state's mainly rural and largely Republican 5th Congressional district (map) in the U.S. House.
Biography
Peterson was born in Titusville, Pennsylvania, and he enlisted in the United States Army upon high school graduation, eventually earning the rank of Specialist Second Class. He attended Pennsylvania State University, from where he earned a business degree. For 26 years, Peterson operated a grocery store in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania.
Peterson was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Republican in 1977 and he was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1984. Peterson was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996. He has been re-elected four times without a Democratic opponent. He did have a Democratic opponent in 2006, whom he easily defeated, to win his election for the 5th time.
John Peterson currently serves on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. He is also a member of the Labor, Health, Human Services, and Education Subcommittee, the Subcommittee on Interior and Related Agencies, and the Subcommittee on Homeland Security. He is well known for his vigorous support for rural people, culture, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
Energy record
Peterson has been among the most outspoken members of the U.S. House on the issues of increased production of domestic energy, specifically natural gas. As a member of the Interior appropropriations subcomittee, Peterson has worked diligently to remove a 26 year old moratorium on producing oil and gas on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). He has been referred to by President George W. Bush, who he has routinely taken on, as "Mr. Energy", and has introduced the first House energy production bill in the 110th Congress in the National Environment and Energy Development (NEED) Act, which is a natural gas production only bill.
