Bar Refaeli (Hebrew: בר רפאלי born June 4, 1985) is an Israeli model, known for her work modeling and her relationship with actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

Biography

Early life

Refaeli was born in the countryside of Israel where her parents owned a horse ranch. It was her mother, Tsipi Refaeli, who first saw potential in her daughter. Bar Refaeli began a modeling career at the age of eight months, appearing in commercials. She had to wear braces in her early years, postponing her modeling. At the age of fifteen, Refaeli returned to modeling.[1]

Career

Refaeli began her modeling career before the age of one.[2] By the age of fifteen she was featured in campaigns for the fashion brands Castro and Pilpel, also starring in a commercial for Milki. Refaeli won the title "Model of The Year" in a beauty contest in 2000 and 2001. She was also chosen to be the home model of Renuar fashion network and appeared in their summer 2002 and winter 2003 catalogues. She was cast for fashion production abroad, among them Dim, and appeared in the French ELLE magazine. She is the first Israeli model to be featured in Sports Illustrated magazine; the same picture was later published on the cover of Maxim. She appeared on the cover of the March 2006 issue of GQ Italy. She was in the March 2007 issue of Sports Illustrated in a swimsuit and posed with the band Aerosmith as well. Refaeli will appear in an English language film Session directed by Chaim Buzaglo.[3]

Personal life

After a relationship with actor and singer David Charvet (during which he came with her to visit Israel), Refaeli was in a highly publicized relationship with actor Leonardo DiCaprio. The pair reportedly ended their relationship in May 2007. On October 20, 2007, Bar Rafaeli was seen leaving a hotel in Tel Aviv with eight-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater. After photographers approached the couple and started taking pictures Slater reportedly pushed a cameraman. Fighting broke out and Slater was taken into custody for questioning before being released shortly thereafter. [4]

Bar Refaeli is currently criticized in Israel due to an interview she gave to the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper in which she made the following statements: "I don't regret not having been drafted into the army." and "Why is it good to die for one's country? it better to live in New York? Why should 18 year old kids die? It's dumb that people have to die for me to stay in Israel."[5]. Rafaeli has since denied accusations of her anti-patriotism and claims that the interview did not accurately reflect her statements. She is reportedly suing Yediot Ahronot. The Israeli daily Haaretz is reporting on October 17, 2007, that in an interview to be published in its pages, Rafaeli responds to the accusations.
