Ibadan is the second largest city in Nigeria and the capital of Oyo State. It has a population of over 1,000,000. Local industries include food processing and cigarette manufacture.

Ibadan was founded by the Yoruba in 1750. It became a Yoruba military headquarters in 1829 and came under British rule in 1893 as part of the Niger River Delta Protectorate. It was the largest city in West Africa for much of the twentieth century.

It is host to Nigeria's first university, the University of Ibadan, which was founded in 1948 as part of the University of London, and the more recent City University, Ibadan.

The city is home to numerous markets (the largest of which is Dugbe Market, the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture whose grounds contain rainforests, Cocoa House (its only skyscraper) and the Transwonderland Amusement Park. The city also has a train station on the line from Lagos to Kano and a small airport. Ibadan's Liberty Stadium has a capacity of 40,000 and is the home of the 3SC (Shooting Stars) professional football club.

Companies with bases in Ibadan include Afprint, Africola, Globacom, NTC Ibadan, Nigerian Breweries and Coca Cola. Television and radio stations in Ibadan include NTA Ibadan, Galaxy Television Ibadan, Oyo State Television, BCOS, FM Ibadan and Radio Nigeria Ibadan.

Ibadan natives of note include a television performer, a K-1 fighter, who is so popular in Japan, Bobby Ologun. There is the house where he was born in the suburbs of the city.
