This is a list of submachine guns with articles available on Wikipedia. Because the exact definition of a submachine gun can vary much from source to source it includes assault rifles chambered for submachine gun or pistol cartridges, some machine pistols, and personal defense weapons (PDWs), all of which are sometimes designated as submachine guns.

Traditional

Using pistol cartridges.

PDW

PDWs use intermediate cartridges that are between pistol and rifle cartridges.

(the last two guns fire 9mm rounds meaning they are not true PDW)

Battle Carbine, Compact Carbine, Subcarbine, Assault carbine

Shortened assault rifles are sometimes designated as submachine guns due to their length.
