Perundurai is a panchayat town and taluk in Erode district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on National Highway 47 between Salem and Coimbatore. It is 19 kilometres from Erode, 80 kilometres from Coimbatore and Salem. Perundurai has developed into a small industrial centre with SIPCOT.

Facilities

Perundurai is slowly developing with institutions such as Kongu Vellalar Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kongu Engineering College, Maharaja Arts and Science College for Women, KMR College of Pharmacy, DMW CNC Centre, Nanda Engineering College, Perundurai Medical College and SIPCOT, as well as industries such as Diesel Machinery Works (DMW), DMW CNC Solutions India Pvt. Ltd., and many small institutions like Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Perundurai. The T.B Sanitorium of Perundurai used to be a well-known tuberculosis treatment centre in the state, and has been developed into a medical college in recent years, following the popularity of domiciliary treatment of tuberculosis.

There is a temple for Lord Shiva, located in the heart of the town, known as Chooleswarar temple. The temple for Lord Vishnu and Amman are located nearby.

Geography

Perundurai is located at 11°16′N 77°35′E / 11.27°N 77.58°E / 11.27; 77.58.[1] It has an average elevation of 292 metres (958 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Perundurai had a population of 16,973. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Perundurai has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 65%. In Perundurai, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.
