Hyland Software Inc. is the developer of the enterprise content management (ECM) software suite called OnBase. Various applications of the suite are used by different industries, with the primary areas being healthcare, financial institutions, insurance, government and manufacturing. Hyland Software is headquartered[1] in Westlake, Ohio and also has other offices in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; Costa Mesa, California; Ottawa, Ontario; São Paulo, Brazil and London, England. The company currently has more than 700 employees and 7,200 customers.

Corporate History

Founding

Hyland Software was established in 1991 by Packy Hyland Jr. He met with members of the Necedah Bank to discuss their data processing and how electronic information technology could reduce printing costs by storing daily reports directly to optical disk. Packy Hyland created the first version of OnBase for the Necedah Bank, which became Hyland Software's first customer. Since OnBase was originally created for a bank, a majority of Hyland Software's customers were in the banking industry until recently when the healthcare field became a key industry[2].

Private Equity Firm

The private equity firm Thoma Cressey Bravo acquired 58% of Hyland Software on July 31, 2007. Shareholders approved the deal on July 12, 2007. Thoma Cressey Bravo paid $265 million for the deal, including $150 million in equity. Management retained their share of the company, amounting to roughly 20%, with the remaining shares being owned by employees and other friends and family members. Hyland Software's management team remained in place during this acquisition.[3]

Acquisition History

September 1, 2006: Matrix Imaging (private enterprise content management company in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan specializing in the higher education sector)
The deal was done to increase expertise in the higher education area. Hyland maintained the remote office.

July 1, 2008: Liberty Information Management Systems (IMS) (private Costa Mesa, California-based enterprise content management company, also with office in Ottawa, Ontario)
Hyland acquired the company to gain a larger customer and partner base. Liberty IMS had approximately 1,000 customers at the time of the acquisition. Both offices in California and Canada have been maintained.

Product

Hyland Software's OnBase product integrates document management, business process automation and records management. It is a single suite of enterprise content management (ECM) applications that uses the same user interface and content repository but is configured to meet specific needs of individuals within an organization. Industry analysts such as Forrester Research focus on the product's imaging and archiving capabilities as its strengths[4]. OnBase provides several of the traditional ECM capabilities including capture, route, manage, share and archiving. This ECM functionality is complemented with specific industry solutions and back office operations.

The OnBase product also offers integrations with other software offerings. This is a result of different industries using software specific to their needs, such as Epic Systems in the healthcare field. Other integrations include Microsoft[5], SAP, Oracle Corporation[6] and Lawson[7].

Services

OnBase OnLine

This service is a Web version of Hyland Software's traditional OnBase product offering. Applications are hosted at a data center and accessed over a secure Internet connection. OnBase OnLine is operated, supported and maintained by Hyland Software and is offered in two ways. The first follows the Software as a Service model, in which OnBase OnLine is paid for on a monthly basis, including selected products and the hosting service. The other offering provides that the organization owns one or more perpetual software licenses while still outsourcing the use and maintenance of the network and servers. OnBase OnLine is SysTrust® certified[8], a certification developed and administered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA).

OnBase Disaster Recovery Services

These services support business continuity planning.

OnBase Data Validation Services

Services include backup/restore, database and disk group validation of the OnBase system. Media for backup is sent to Hyland Software's corporate headquarters for validation on either a monthly or quarterly basis.

OnBase Hosted Disaster Recovery Service

Provides customers with access to a hosted OnBase system in the event of a disaster. Synchronization occurs between the customer's on-premise solution and the OnBase OnLine hosting site up to once a minute.

Hyland Software University (HSU)

HSU is Hyland Software's onsite training facility. New employees each complete some level of training depending on the employees' job description. HSU also offers technology-centric courses after employees have completed the initial training to maintain continued education and provides compensation to employees seeking outside certifications related to their jobs. Other educational programs include a mentoring program called "Around HSI in 90 Days" and a leadership program called Emerging Leaders.

Amenities and Activities

The corporate office offers onsite amenities for its employees including a restaurant, hair salon, chair massages and a Montessori-based daycare. Other service providers include a dietician, seamstress and on-site car washes.

Team-building activities are also offered throughout the year, such as a Cedar Point day, paintball, family picnics and participating in the Cleveland Corporate Challenge. The Challenge is made up of several events that Hyland employees compete in throughout the summer months, including softball, bowling, volleyball, mini-golf and kickball. Hyland Software has sponsored the dodgeball event for the past few years.

Philanthropic Efforts

The mission of Hyland Software's philanthropic goal is to enable children to learn more efficiently and effectively. Four main facets comprise the philanthropic effort including alliances with local and national non-profit organizations primarily committed to children, supporting employee sponsored efforts, software contributions and the Hyland Software Technology Initiative Scholarship available annually to graduating seniors in the Northeast Ohio region. HylandSoftware.org is the web location for Hyland's philanthropic activities.
