Plot synopsis
Summary
After Harrison Wilson accepts the job position as principal of West Beverly Hills High, the Wilson family must relocate from Kansas to California and adjust to new life in the city - all while keeping a close watch on their troubled grandmother Tabitha.[1]
Expanded overview
Annie Wilson and her brother Dixon, whose first day at West Beverly Hills High School leaves no doubt they're not in Kansas anymore. The Wilson family, including dad Harry and mom Debbie, has relocated to Beverly Hills to keep an eye on Harry's mother Tabitha, a feisty-but-faded former television star and a charter member of the Betty Ford Clinic.
For Annie and Dixon, the awkwardness of being the new kids is made worse by the fact that their dad has taken a job as the high school principal. The school is one big culture shock for Annie, a sweet and friendly girl with a passion for the theater, and Dixon, a star athlete and scholar who was adopted by the Wilson family after they took him in as a foster child. Annie and Dixon have a close sibling relationship, which they'll need to help them cope with all the new cliques and classmates, including Naomi, a hot, spoiled, rich girl; Ethan, a popular jock whose abilities rival Dixon's. Navid, an aspiring journalist who heads up the school's daily newscast; and Silver, a rebel who produces and stars in a YouTube-type video series.
Even the faculty seems hip and sophisticated at WBHHS, such as smart and funny teacher Ryan Matthews and beautiful guidance counselor Kelly Taylor. Kelly's former classmate, Donna Martin, owns a local clothing boutique. The Wilson family has just begun to realize how much their lives are about to change.[4]

The story also noted that original 90210 creator Darren Star is not involved with the project.[5] Kristin Dos Santos confirmed on her "Watch with Kristin" blog at E! Online that the show is indeed a spinoff with completely new characters, and not a remake.[6] Production for 90210 began on June 25, 2008.[1]
Writing
Further casting details of the 2008 spinoff have emerged as The Hollywood Reporter announced on March 19, 2008 that The CW has begun casting even before a script has been completed.
On April 15, 2008, Rob Thomas announced that he was stepping down as the creator of the series, due to his commitment to two ABC drama pilots. Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah (What About Brian, Freaks & Geeks) are now the new producers of the series; they wrote a new version of the script.[7]
Casting
The first actor to be cast was Dustin Milligan on March 31, 2008 as Ethan Ward,[5] followed by AnnaLynne McCord on April 15.[8] Actress/singer Hilary Duff was rumored to have been offered a part on the spinoff as Annie Wilson, a theater and music student, but she told reports that it was "not true".[9][10] The role was filled by Shenae Grimes, most well-known for her role as Darcy Edwards on Degrassi: The Next Generation.[11]
On April 28, 2008, Lori Loughlin was cast in the role of Debbie Wilson.[12] Then on April 29, 2008, Jessica Walter was cast as Tabitha Wilson, the 60-ish actress and alcoholic grandmother,[13][5] and Ryan Eggold will play an unorthodox teacher named Ryan Matthews.[14] The cast of teenagers was rounded out when Jessica Stroup (April 30),[15] Tristan Wilds[16] and Michael Steger (both May 2),[17] were cast as Daphne "Silver" Silver, Dixon Wilson and Navid Shirazi respectively. Finally, Rob Estes (May 19) was the last actor to join the series as the character Harrison "Harry" Wilson.[18]
