Selena Marie Gomez[1][2] (born July 22, 1992) is an American actress who stars as Alex Russo on the Disney Channel Original Series, Wizards of Waverly Place. She appeared in episodes of other Disney Channel series. In 2008 she signed with Hollywood Records for a debut album.
Early life
Selena Gomez, an only child, was born in New York City, and raised in Grand Prairie, Texas. Her father is from Mexico and her mother is of half Italian ancestry.[3][4] She was named after slain Tejano music singer Selena and has met her family.[5] Her mother, Mandy Teefy, is a former stage actress.[6]
Career
Her first role was on Barney & Friends as Gianna. Gomez was discovered by Disney in a nation wide Disney talent search when she was 10 years old. In 2006, she appeared as Gwen in the second season of The Suite Life of Zack & Cody in the episode A Midsummer's Nightmare. In 2007 she appeared in two second-season episodes of Hannah Montana as Mikayla, a pop star who is a rival of Hannah Montana. In 2007 Gomez took part in at least two television pilots. Wizards of Waverly Place was picked up with Gomez playing the lead role, Alex Russo, and performing the theme song. The series premiered October 2007 on Disney Channel. She is co-starring as the main character Mary in Another Cinderella Story, a sequel to A Cinderella Story.
Gomez contributed a cover of the classic "Cruella de Vil" for the 101 Dalmatians platinum DVD and DisneyMania 6. In 2008, she was shown in the Jonas Brothers music video, "Burnin' Up". She signed an non-exclusive record deal with Hollywood Records just before her 16th birthday. She will be part of a band rather than a solo artist.[7] She states that she wants to sound like her favorite band Paramore[citation needed]. Gomez told Popstar magazine that the expectations fans would expect from her debut is to "Rock Out", have fun, and it would be nothing serious.
YouTube videos
Gomez makes YouTube Webcam videos with fellow Barney & Friends actress Demi Lovato, who says they have been friends since the Barney auditions. Gomez also makes YouTube videos with Wizards of Waverly Place co-stars Jennifer Stone and David Henrie.
In July 2008, Gomez was part of an alleged feud with Miley Cyrus. After Gomez and Lovato posting a video on YouTube, Cyrus uploaded a blatant spoof as part of the "Miley & Mandy" show, which caught the interest of entertainment media. Reports included the theory that Gomez and Cyrus were arguing over fellow Disney star Nick Jonas,[8] or that Gomez and Lovato might replace Cyrus after Cyrus' Vanity Fair photo shoot.[9]
Gomez and Cyrus extinguished the rumors.[9][10] On the issue of replacing Cyrus, Gomez clarified, "I'm not interested in being anybody but myself, and I'm not here to replace anyone. I think that she's a wonderful performer, and of course it's a compliment. But I would like to take a different route."[10]
Personal Life
Gomez is best friends with fellow Barney & Friends actress Demi Lovato and the pair make YouTube Webcam videos together. When asked a question of how long the pair have been friends, Demi answered "when I asked her to sit on my jacket and draw with crayons (at the Barney auditions)". She is also good friends with the Jonas Brothers. Just like the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato, Gomez wears a purity ring.
