Iron Maiden are a British heavy metal band founded in 1975 by bassist and only permanent member Steve Harris. After several auditions and lineup changes, the band settled on vocalist Paul Di'Anno, guitarists Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton, and drummer Clive Burr. They released their self-titled debut in 1980; considered as one of heavy metal's all-time best debuts, the album proved to be incredibly influential for future metal bands.[1] Iron Maiden's breakthrough sophomore, 1981's Killers, was the first album with new guitarist Adrian Smith, replacing Dennis Stratton.[2] Later that year, vocalist Paul Di'Anno left the band, and was replaced by Bruce Dickinson. In 1982, they issued the groundbreaking The Number of the Beast, although has caused controversy among religious groups—due the demonic album title—who wrongfully labeled the band as Satan worshippers, the album was the band's first release to top the UK charts.[3] Clive Burr was replaced by drummer Nicko McBrain and the band released Piece of Mind, in 1983,[4] followed by 1984's Powerslave, that was the first Iron Maiden album to feature the same lineup for more than a single record.[5] In 1986, Iron Maiden decided to broaden their sound with the use of synthesizers for their next album, Somewhere in Time, and were rewarded with one of their most commercially successful releases.[6] 1988's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, is a concept album telling the story of a prophet who tries (unsuccessfully) to warn a village of an impending holocaust.[7] The lineup had remained unchanged until guitarist Adrian Smith left the band being replaced by Janick Gers, and Iron Maiden issued No Prayer for the Dying in 1990, their last gold-certified album in the U.S.[8] 1992's Fear of the Dark, was the Bruce Dickinson's last album with the band (until their late-'90s reunion).[9] Dickinson's replacement, Blaze Bayley, debut with The X Factor; released in 1995, the album failed to chart and was not a critical success due a "lack of powerful riffs and tightly written songs."[10] In 1998, little interest in the Virtual XI album prompted Bayley's termination;[11] Dickinson and Smith returned to the band in 1999, with Janick Gers remaining as member, and a new album, entitled Brave New World was issued in 2000,[12] followed by 2003's Dance of Death, which received positive reviews and is regarded as "marked the triumphant return of old-school Iron Maiden."[13] In 2006, they released A Matter of Life and Death, considered "more elaborate and meandering experience" that its predecessor.[14] Iron Maiden was and is one of the most influential bands of the heavy metal genre, and to date has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide.[15][16]
