Popotan is a 2003 Japanese anime television series based on the visual novel produced by Petit Ferret under the same name.[1] The anime was developed by Shaft, directed and storyboarded by Shinichiro Kimura, written by Jukki Hanada and features character designs by Rondo Mizukami based off Akio Watanabe's original concept[2] under the alias Poyoyon Rock.[3] The story follows three sisters, Ai, Mai and Mii, and their maid, Mea, as they travel through time inside a mansion and talking to dandelions, which they refer to as "popotan", searching for the mysterious figure, Shizaku.

A teaser DVD was released on June 27, 2003 entitled "The Secret of the 3 Sisters" (3姉妹のひ・み・つ~). It contains interviews with the anime's staff, music to the anime's opening and closing themes —"Popotan Hatake de Tsukamaete" (ぽぽたん畑でつかまえて) by Under17 and "S-U-K-I" by Funta respectively— [4] illustrations, and a plushie of Unagi.[5] The anime contains 12 episodes which first aired on TBS's satellite station BS-i from July 17, 2003 through October 3, 2003.[2] From September 26, 2003 and February 25, 2004 the anime was released on Japanese DVD by Bandai Visual.[6][7]

There were six Japanese DVDs released, each containing two episodes. In addition, these discs came with a promotional figurine of one of the girls. A Region 2 box set was released by Bandai Visual the same day that the last individual DVD was published.[8] Although the box set was cheaper, it did not come with the promotional content of the original DVDs. Geneon USA licensed the DVDs for North American release. Between December 12, 2004 and March 22, 2005, it produced three DVDs each with four episodes.[9][10] A final box set was released on August 14, 2007, shortly before Geneon's demise.[10] Unlike the Japanese DVD releases, the English ones had no promotional content.

The opening theme, "Popotan Hatake de Tsukamaete", was also released on the Under17 Best Album 2 Moe Songu o Kiwameru zo (Under17 Best Album 2 萌えソングをきわめるゾ!!) compilation [11] and played during both of their world tours.[12]
