Peppa Pig is an animated television series created and produced in London by Astley Baker Davies Ltd and distributed by Contender Entertainment Group.

Background

Peppa Pig is a children's show that consists of many different, 5 minute, episodes. It revolves around the life of Peppa, a young (aged 3) anthropromorphic girl pig, and her family and friends. Her brother, George, is 2, her cousin Chloe is 5 and cousin Alexander is under 1. Each of her friends is a different species of mammal, each of which has a first name starting with the same letter as the type of animal they are (which is also their surname). Peppa's friends are the same age as her, and George's friend Richard is the same as him. episodes tend to feature every day activities such as attending playgroup, going swimming, visiting their grand parents, going to the play ground riding bikes, etc.

The characters all wear clothes, live in houses, and drive cars, but still display some characteristics of the animals on which they are based. Peppa and her family snort like pigs during conversations and also like to jump in muddy puddles. The other animals also make their respective appropriate noises when they talk, with some exhibiting other characteristics, such as the Rabbit family's fixation with carrots. The Rabbits are also the sole exception to the rule of human-like habitation, in that they live in a burrow in a hill, although it does have windows and is furnished in the same way as the other houses.

The first series of 52 five-minute episodes aired on Five in 2004, and had its American premiere as part of Cartoon Network's Tickle-U preschool television programming block on August 22, 2005, and Noggin In Dec 2007/Jan 2008, re-dubbed with American voices. In the United Kingdom, it can also be seen on Nick Jr., the same with Portugal, Italy, Benelux, Scandinavia and Australia. In Taiwan, the show can be seen on Playhouse Disney. The second series of 52 episodes began on Five on Monday 4 September 2006, with Cecily Bloom replacing Lily Snowden-Fine as Peppa, amongst other cast changes. A ten-minute special - Peppa's Christmas - is due for DVD release in the UK in November 2007 (see below).

Awards

The episode Mummy Pig at Work received "The Cristal for best TV production" at Annecy International Animated Film Festival in June 2005.

At the 10th British Academy Children's Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) on Sunday 27 November 2005, Mummy Pig at Work also won the "Pre-School Children's Animation" award.[1]

Characters

Characters are listed below in their family groupings.

Peppa's classmates from playgroup are listed first within their families. The only recurring character known to be George's age is Richard Rabbit. The parents in each family also attended playgroup together (as shown in the episode The Time Capsule), so are probably approximately the same age as each other.

The Pigs

  • Peppa Pig
  • George
  • Mummy Pig
  • Daddy Pig
  • Grandpa Pig
  • Granny Pig
  • Uncle Pig
  • Auntie Pig
  • Chloé
  • Alexander

Notes:

Peppa Pig is rather bossy, always taking a lead role in school activities and games with her friends, and can be a bit mean to her little brother George.

Peppa's favourite toy is her Teddy, while George's is "Mr Dinosaur," although he can only say "Dine-saw".

Daddy Pig is a bit bumbling and eats too much - "Daddy's big tummy" is a frequent source of jokes - while Mummy Pig is far more sensible and practical than Daddy. It is possible that Daddy pig used to be quite sporty, as he makes references to how he used to be good at swimming, running and ballet; however, he also often makes other claims, which prove to be untrue, such as being able to speak French, or read maps.

The episode Granny and Grandpa's Attic suggest that Granny and Grandpa Pig are the parents of Mummy Pig, as she find her old record in the attic, and Granny and Grandpa pig comment on how she always used to listen to it.

Granny and Grandpa Pig have a pet parrot named 'Polly'. Grandpa Pig is a keen gardener, keeps bees, and is good at making things.

Chloé and Alexander are the cousins of Peppa and George; Chloé is older than Peppa and Alexander is a small baby (younger than George). Uncle Pig is Daddy Pig's Brother.

The episode The Time Capsule shows that Mummy and Daddy Pig have known each other since playgroup.

The Rabbits

  • Rebecca Rabbit
  • Richard Rabbit
  • Miss Rabbit
  • Mr Rabbit

Note: There has been some confusion over Miss Rabbit and Mr Rabbit. Mr Rabbit is Rebecca and Richard's father. On the end credits of an episode featuring him, he is also referred to as Daddy Rabbit. Miss Rabbit is their mother too, as Rebecca called her 'Mummy' in an episode. There are no other Rabbits.

The Dogs

  • Danny Dog
  • Granddad Dog
  • Mrs Dog

Notes: Danny is mostly seen with his grandfather, who also attends several school events. Danny's mother is seen in some episodes, but his father is not.

The Zebras

  • Zoe Zebra
  • Mr Zebra
  • Mummy Zebra
  • Zaza
  • Zuzu

Notes: Zoe is mostly seen with her father, the postman. Mummy Zebra is seen at the Zebras house along with Zaza and Zuzu (who appear to be younger than George).

The Cats

  • Candy Cat
  • Mrs Cat

The Sheep

  • Suzy Sheep
  • Mummy Sheep

Notes: In the episode Pretend Friend Suzy has an imaginary friend named 'Leo Lion'.

The Ponys

  • Pedro Pony
  • Mr Pony
  • Mrs Pony

Mr Pony is an optician.

The Elephants

  • Emily Elephant
  • Dr Elephant

Notes: Dr Elephant is seen in the episode Sports Day, suggesting he is Emily's father.

The Donkeys

  • Delphine Donkey
  • Didier
  • Mama Donkey
  • Papa Donkey

Notes: Delphine is Peppa's French pen pal and Didier is her little brother, who has a toy dragon[1]

Others

The following characters seem not to be part of larger family.

  • Madame Gazelle
  • Mr Bull
  • Dr Brown Bear

Adult animals' jobs

Geography

  • Every house that Peppa and her family visit (including their own) is located at the top of a hill. Indeed almost every location is at the top of a hill, including the Museum, Daddy Pig's office, and Windy Castle. A notable exception is Granddad Dog's garage.
  • Most of the maps seen in the programme only have three buildings marked on them: Peppa Pig's house, Granny and Grandpa Pig's house, and Windy Castle.

Other

  • In Ballet Lessons, the musical score written on the blackboard is the start of the programme's theme tune
  • In Daddy Pig's Office, Daddy Pig has the formula for solving the roots of a quadratic equation on his whiteboard
  • In episode New Car, the loud music that comes on by accident is Effect A Change taken from the album Once Like A Spark by the band Jetplane Landing
  • In the episode Rock Pools the little fish rescued by Peppa is a mackerel.
