In 1981, Thalía started in the local Group Din Din and then went on the perform in the music festival Juguemos a Cantar, first as part of a group and then as a soloist. In 1984 she was cast in the teenage version of the stage production Grease, which starred a musical band named Timbiriche, ending up with the lead as Sandy. In 1986 she replaced one of the female vocalists of Timbiriche and the band's fame skyrocketed. That same year she was cast in her first soap opera Pobre Señorita Limantour. In 1987 she starred in the Mexican soap opera Quinceañera after which she went to Los Angeles, California to prepare herself to pursue a solo career.

In 1990 she released her first album earning a gold record the following year. In 1991 she went to Spain to star in different television programs and released her second album, which also went gold. By 1993 her third album LOVE went platinum. The year 1992 was also the beginning of a successful acting career in México. She starred in Televisa's soap opera María Mercedes, following a series of others like Marimar, María La Del Barrio and later on Rosalinda. These were huge successes in countries like USA, Indonesia, Portugal, Dominican Republic, Germany, Peru, Senegal, China, Greece, Philippines, Brazil and have been sold in over 100 countries. Her soap operas are simple stories and all are based on adaptations to the well-know Cinderella's story, the female main caracter is born in poverty and then meets a wealthy young man and later they get married.

In 1997 Atlantic Records released the soundtrack for the animated feauture Anastasia, which included as a bonus track the Spanish version of "Journey to the Past" in the voice of Thalía.

Also in that year, she came in the Philippines and she had her major concert at the Araneta Coliseum and filled almost 15,000 thousand capacity. Thalia release her only Philippine album entitled Nandito Ako, her also carrier single. She also done the Tagalog version of a popular merengue song called El Venao whose title is Chika Lang. She recorded that particular album mostly in Tagalog and English language.

She has been a guest in TV programs like Hard Copy, Entertainment Tonight, El Show de Cristina Saralegui and The Rosie O'Donnell Show. She also starred in Mambo Café, a modest Hollywood production in which she played a Puerto Rican young girl along with Danny Aiello and Rosanna de Soto with Paul Rodriguez as her father.

Currently Thalía lives in New York, where she married the former president of Sony Music, Tommy Mottola and ex-husband of the American singer Mariah Carey.

In 2003 Thalía released her first English album called Thalía, featuring the rapper Fat Joe in one of the tracks. She also released a successful clothing line for Kmart under the name Thalía Sodi Collection. Despite her long career it took more than a decade for her to give a live perfomance in her native Mexico City, which resulted in a great success and many satisfied fans.

Thalia signed a contract with the chocolate maker, Hershey's. She appears in the company's Spanish-language advertisements and sells her own branch of Hershey's products called La Dulcería Thalía (Thalia's Candy Store).

Thalia had the honor of opening a special tribute concert for the late Latin star Selena, whom she had personally met shortly before Selena's untimely death, with the song "Amor Prohobido." Many criticized her performance, and felt it did an injustice to Selena's music, but her supporters felt the criticisms (which were levied by her usual detractors) were unfair since Thalia's singing style was vastly different than Selena's.

Her latest album El Sexto Sentido, was released this summer and was recorded mostly in the Spanish laguage, but with a few of the cuts sung in English as well.
