The National Institute of Technology, Raipur was established as "Government College of Engineering and Technology" in Raipur (Chhattisgarh) on 1956-09-14. The construction work was completed in 1962 and inauguration was done on 1963-03-14 by India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The first session of the college had commenced from 1956-07-01.National Institute of Technology Raipur is a Technical Institution of national importance set up by an Act of parliament(Act 29 of 2007) namely, the National Institute of technology Act 2007, which received the assent of the President of India on 5th June,2007. The provision of the Act have come into force with effect from 15th August,2007 as per Notification S.O.1384(E) dated 9th August, 2007 of the MHRD(Dept. of Higher Education),New Delhi. As per the provision of the said Act, this Institution runs on non profitable basis.

The Golden Jubilee Celebrations
The institute formerly Govt. Engg. College, Raipur. celebrated its golden jubilee celebrations during 25-27 December 2005.
Eclectika
Eclectika is the fest or NIT Raipur. This year's event was big hit with as many as 60 events and many colleges came across India.
Placements Cell
This cell started some significant work in the year 2006-07 through the untiring efforts of self motivated students of GEC Raipur to provide better placements and career options to the passing out batch.It was a tough job to search for HR and alumni in top positions and create brand equity of NIT Raipur students.An official "Placement Cell", was formed which looks after the process of placements here.The placement cell is completely handled by students themselves and results have been encouraging.
