"D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)" is a song by by American rapper Jay-Z, released June 5, 2009 as the first single off the rap mogul's eleventh studio album, The Blueprint³. It was produced by No I.D. and Kanye West, who contributed vocals in the bridge. The song made its world premiere on radio station Hot 97 on June 5th. It features a sample by the Janko Nilovic song, "In the Space".[1]
Writing and inspiration
In late May 2009, West told MTV in a interview that, "We actually removed all the songs with Auto-Tune off of his album to make the point that this is an anti-Auto-Tune album, even though I released an album that has all Auto-Tune," referring to his 2008 album, 808s & Heartbreak.[2]
Remixes
On June 9th, R&B artist Trey Songz released an unofficial remix of the song on his blog. Renamed "Death of Kellz Autotune", it was directed at artist R. Kelly for using the effect on a previous mixtape.[3]
Live performances
Two days after the song premiered on Hot 97, Jay-Z made an appearance at the annual Summer Jam concert at Giants Stadium and performed the song live for the first time.[4] Towards the end of his set, he was surprised by the appearance of T-Pain. BET later confirmed on their website that the rapper would perform at the 2009 BET Awards.[5]
