Royal Pains is a USA cable network television series starring Mark Feuerstein. The pilot was filmed in the Hamptons, Long Island, New York in fall 2008.[1] The Hollywood Reporter reported on January 5 that the series was picked up for a 12-episode season.[2] This show premiered on Thursday, June 4, 2009.[3] The pilot was directed by Jace Alexander, who also filmed the pilot of Burn Notice, another USA show, which airs in the hour before Royal Pains. Andrew Lenchewski wrote the pilot and Rich Frank and Paul Frank executive produce the project, with Lenchewski co-executive producing and John Rogers producing.

Premise

After Brooklyn, New York City emergency medicine doctor Hank Lawson makes a principled decision in the emergency room in which he saves the life of a teenager at the cost of the life of an elderly billion dollar hospital trustee, he loses his career and his fiancee. His younger brother Evan, a CPA, convinces him to go partying in the Hamptons, Long Island for a weekend. When they crash a party and Hank saves an ailing woman's life, he haphazardly becomes a concierge doctor for the rich and famous in the Hamptons.

Physician assistant Divya insists on becoming Hank's employee, even though he has no intention of becoming a concierge doctor.

Cast & Characters

Main Characters

  • Hank Lawson (Mark Feuerstein) - The protagonist. A successful New York doctor, he was dismissed because he triaged a dying teenager before a billionaire hospital benefactor, who ended up dying. He spends the next few months in a tailspin of broken engagements and unpaid bills around before his brother convinces him to attend a posh party in the Hamptons. At the party, he saves supermodel April Fernandez, and wins the favor of German Royality Boris. This leads to referrals to other rich clientele. Despite Hank's disliking of the higher class, a love interest in Jill Casey convinces him to become a concierge doctor. He drives a well-aged Saab 900 Turbo convertible essentially identical to his potential love interest Jill Casey's.
  • Evan Lawson (Paulo Costanzo) - Hank Lawson's brother. He's an accountant (CPA) and and makes himself Hank's CFO after he establishes "Hank Med." He views the Hamptons as a place to party and have sex, actions deterred by his slight figure. He's a rather materialistic person, especially in comparison to his brother and when promised money and fun, he's up to do anything.
  • Divya Katdare (Reshma Shetty) - Hank Lawson's physician assistant. She interviews to be Hank's physician assistant after word travels of Hank's instant reputation as concierge doctor. Initially brushed off by Hank (despite her truckload of medical supplies), she has gained the job by the second episode. She is East Indian and her family is into polo.
  • Jill Casey (Jill Flint) - Hank's apparent love interest, who works at Hamptons Heritage, the area hospital looked down upon by the elite. They meet while leaving Boris' party and again when Hank is dealing with "New Parts" Newberg. At the end of the season opener, Jill and Hank's love and career interests blossom at a crab shack. She drives a well-aged Saab 900 Turbo convertible essentially identical to Hank Lawson's.

Recurring Characters

  • Tucker & Libby (Ezra Miller & Meredith Hagner) - Hank's second and third Hampton patients. Tucker Bryant is the son of the heir to a fortune in blenders, and Libby is his squeeze. Tucker and Libby were injured when Tucker crashed his father's Ferrari. Libby's injuries were mild but, proves to be an cyberchondriac and thanks to the internet is prone to bouts of medical babbling. Tucker, whose injuries proved worse, is a hemophiliac, which complicated his injuries. Hank performs a MacGyver like triage to stabilize him. Hank later befriends the couple, despite a stern rebuke from Tucker's father.
